Load-shedding traffic heroes

One of the major issues associated with rotational power cuts is their effects on traffic flow in South Africa's cities.

When Eskom turns off the power to an area, the traffic lights can no longer function, resulting in jams at these intersections.

While South Africa's traffic and metro police should be taking the initiative to ease congestion by directing traffic themselves, they often don't.

Attention all street vendors/beggars:

Now that's how you fill in the blanks on your curriculum vitae!

PS: We salute you.

Does not take an Einstein to direct traffic.

Not legal, but then what is in this country.

If you want to get sue happy and enrich the lawyers, direct your efforts toward the various derelict police forces.

The statement also explained that, under the Road Traffic Act, it was illegal for unqualified individuals to direct traffic or even stand in the road to trade or beg.

What qualification is required to be a successful and legal begger? (asking for a friend)

The cops are rushing to do more important things like buying the special at KFC or setting up a roadblock next to an ignored pothole.

We have the most useless bunch of pork chops in the world.

“We propose an effective and simple solution: follow the load-shedding schedule and plan for the deployment of traffic pointsmen to affected busy intersections before the load-shedding starts.”

Good, but I think the problem you will have is that if they see profit in it, they'll start creating the work when the light stay on too long. I am sure some these informal pothole repairers create some of the potholes to earn money.

There was a local beggar guy (often under the influence) would switch off the traffic lights at Garsfontein Rd and Rubenstein Dr to direct traffic in hopes of tips from drivers, luckily CoT replaced the control box with a new secure unit and that was the end of that.

CoT, should have installed a secure box in the first place, they where negligent, thus created an opportunity for the beggar.

Apart from batteries being stolen that keeps traffic lights running during load shedding. Why haven't we found alternative ways to keep traffic lights running? Is the power consumption so high that they can't run off solar during the day?

Great, until these guys figure out that they could simply damage the robots to assume the role and receive financial reward and social relevance.

These guys are not heroes, they are in the way, and will become a menace.

What batteries that keep the traffic lights running. Loadshedding time they are all dead.

Before you start putting solar panels up for traffic lights, just supply the Khasi first, so there is no market for them, and they don't get stolen faster than you can put them up.

The problem with this is that when people see an unauthoritative individual directing traffic they may simply ignore them and follow the real rules of the road leading to accidents. Also as they don't know all of the procedures they may not do things like stop oncoming traffic so cars can turn leading to more frustration.
