Same for me.... plus my area is down at the moment as well, and even if they fix the "issue" at 7:55 tonight, they will STILL load shed the whole area. Fsckers.
 
:mad:We can't "dodge the bullet" in Group 8 tonight 20:00 to 22:30 again. Too old to apply to me but do you think that theres that Eskom will subsidize child grants for their c*ck ups?

My setup is very very simple.

I have a secured waterproof room outside the house at the back.
I have a fan and generator in this room.
I have a couple of leads that go to several needed areas (kitchen and lounge).
Power goes off I turn on the genny, plug a fan into it (helps stabilise the power to have some load and keep the genny cool/blow away the smell) then plug the leads in (fan +ups in tv room and multiplug in kitchen).

Power restoration is a reverse of the above.

I often read about you guys turning on the generator in different ways. Can you tell me if we're doing it wrong please? We have a 7.5kva generator. Power goes off, we switch the earth and mains leakage off, start the generator, one plug goes into the genny and one into a plug point in the house. It powers everything in the house including the aircon and stove. Is it okay to start it like that?

Not in the slightest, that is HIGHLY dangerous.

You need to get a sparky out to wire up a transfer switch for you, and that will go directly into your main DB Board.

This is called a dead man's lead for a reason. Besides being extremely dangerous, it's also completely illegal.

This setup does not go through the earth leakage unit in your DB so if your kids, pets or anyone touches the live wires they can be electrocuted and die.
It's highly dangerous yet probably the majority of people running generators are doing it this way. :(

I'd rather spend the R4K-5K and get a transfer switch and cabling installed. What's the life of a loved one worth to you?
