My solution:
Generator at the ready as are extension cords.
TV+PC on UPS.
Power goes off Genny goes on and power plugs get swapped for ups stuff.
Cable ready for kettle or microwave at all times as well.

Can you connect a genny to a pc? (i know you not, just a random question)
Hi AstroTurf, would you consider Sharing details of your set up to help us laymen?
I often read about you guys turning on the generator in different ways. Can you tell me if we're doing it wrong please? We have a 7.5kva generator. Power goes off, we switch the earth and mains leakage off, start the generator, one plug goes into the genny and one into a plug point in the house. It powers everything in the house including the aircon and stove. Is it okay to start it like that?
Yikes! We've been doing it this way for a while nowNot in the slightest, that is HIGHLY dangerous.
You need to get a sparky out to wire up a transfer switch for you, and that will go directly into your main DB Board.

This is called a dead man's lead for a reason. Besides being extremely dangerous, it's also completely illegal.
