This setup does not go through the earth leakage unit in your DB so if your kids, pets or anyone touches the live wires they can be electrocuted and die.
It's highly dangerous yet probably the majority of people running generators are doing it this way. :(

I'd rather spend the R4K-5K and get a transfer switch and cabling installed. What's the life of a loved one worth to you?

The transfer switch is next on my list. For now I have 30m of 2.5 cabling in case we really need it, but it is purely last resort. Problem is - thanks to my house's layout - I'll have to lift roof panels, etc.

I've been thinking about it and I was wondering if this would work. What if we get a couple of extension cords and plug what we need into it and then into the genny? I have a gas stove, so it would just be the tv, ps3, couple of fans and lamps, fridge and freezer. The generator has 2 plug points if that helps. Would this be safe?

What size generator?


Anyway trying should not hurt.

Decent genny!!!

The best and safest way is to get an electrician to install a cutover switch to your DB.

I would run pc stuff off a ups to be on the safe side or test your avr with a couple of lights, a fan and a powertool (compressor). See what the lights and fan do when large power is drawn to start a motor.
 
Bear in mind 7.5kva is 30 amps. Double what your plug sockets are designed for. Dead man's lead is asking for trouble...
