Are any of these any good ?

On WA and their feed seems like the Mummies ( dead & dessicated )

SAIX any good ?

Any local "open" ones ( not tied to ISP blah de blah etc etc )

Any other *free* ones out there that carry a full list ( I am only looking for one or two things - NO -- NOT those :D )

Unfortunately since the advent of manufacturer dedicated forums the level of text based conversation in some technical groups is a waste of time.

XS used to be quite decent until they dropped the free account to 10 days retention.
From the local ISP ones, and I've tried them all, I reckon the best I've come across is Mweb's news server.

IS's one runs very, very, very fast for files under 3 days old. 3-30 days is okay. Anything older, forget about it. It will average 20kB/s. Im not sure about the other local ones.

Get an international block account as these don't expire in a month but until it is used up. http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/block-usenet.html i know you wanted to use a local server but there is no option to use one that works on ALL isps sadly.

If you want premium performance, you will need a premium account with a proper news server. I pay R80 p/m for Astraweb uncapped 10Mbps.

ALL local news servers a waste of time

On behalf of Saix, within it;s retention i can say, with confidence that it's a reliable server.
NO
Takes forever just to try and download the groups list
Looks like all the cheap-skate peeps have gone and got cheap local only accounts and are now sucking the life out of SAIX news
You can try textnews.saix.net 196.43.3.60 which comes up pretty quickly BUT has NO binary groups SUPRISE SUPRISE :(

Went to a free edu server in Poland -- comes up with group list headers everything almost instantaneously.

Wonderful if you are reading for a degree in AI :)

Anyway -- shows nothing wrong on my side

Maybe RPM ( or staff writer ) should do a detailed informed article about local news servers -- and the miserable leechers that inhabit them :(:erm:;)

GO Local ?

Maybe it is time TENET or TERRACO or someone on the carrier grade backbone set up a decent one open to all -- who get an account.

How difficult for these BIG guys who already have all the nuts and bolts ( and screws loose )

You are expecting a free, excellent service? In what world are you living in? Other people must pay the cost so that you can enjoy yourself? It doesn't work like that, buddy. If you want a proper Usenet service, pay for it.

Pay , Pay , and pay some more

Let's for a moment forget about the "other -people" & enjoying myself

I use a small amount of my PAID for CAP

So in essence I am subsidizing all those other uncapped users ?

I do NOT download "binaries" 24 /7

I use the Internet for "serious" work most of the time !

I can see that you were not around at the birth of the Internet ( NOT the Webz )
In those far off halcyon days UseNet WAS free. ( before TV , digital media and the consumer media frenzy )

In any case I already PAY an ISP -- who say they provide a service -- which includes a News -Server
IF the damn thing does not work then they should get rid of it -- or charge for it ( and make it work properly )

You yourself said it... pay for one that works. Don't expect our local news servers to be anywhere near as good as the international paid ones. It ain't gonna happen.

Local open (to most ISPs) paid for news service coming soon :) Incredibly fast, stable, redundant and completely custom written software with one thing in mind - scalability. I'm -hoping- to target at around R150 to R200PM for an unlimited account with about 20 concurrent sessions.

News service will unfortunately only be opened to ISPs which are prepared to peer free of charge. Initial coverage, will include (amongst others), MWEB as well as WebAfrica subscribers.

Takers??

Not sure of the benefits. You get full speed 24/7 access with pay to use servers that charge $10 a month (~R80) and with 1400+ days retention.

What benefit does a local server have? (if it were pay to use)

Local is Lekker but Buite is better ( maybe )

Not much
So much has changed with uncapped accounts and abundant international bandwidth
Local only is an extinct species.

The argument is now moot
The local news servers are now suddenly all working hundreds
( or maybe before I just had something set wrong ? )

:)

Gibinews 3.50 Euro per month. I used to use Astraweb but for the last 5 months have been using Gibinews with no issues.

Use this promotional code and you will get 14 days free trial UE95QtPasfvj1bXXLOmP
