IMO, when people see what BS 3d TV really is, they will come back to plasmas and LCD's.

Should be important to mention the non 3D model which goes for R3,999 - R4,500, the PS43D450 (opposed to the 3D D490). Plasma offers superior value not only at 50"+.

My point exactly. I prever watching a movie in good quality HD than in 3D. 3D is a scam.Decent article, however:

It is currently tough to find any high end TV which does not support 3D. I also have no interest in 3D, but if you want a cool TV it basically comes bundled...plasma and LED.

I dunno hey all the stuff i saw was crazy expensive if it was 3d, as you say high end. Double the price. I bought a cheap jvc 43" for 5k and it was awesome as a tv but i ended up buying a samsung 46" for 10k and when i saw the 3d tv pricing i thought there is no way i would waste money on 3d.
For the same high end 3d pricing you could get a crazy big tv though. I checked 3d out but it looked shyte. Not sure if those cheap ass glasses were the problem but wow horrible stuff.

3d is a gimmick! I watched monsters inc in 3d on a huge 63inch samsung series 9 (which costs like 80k) and it looked crap. 3d just makes things look dark and fuzzy. Waste of money imo! Blue ray in 2d on a good led tv is still the best.

Is plasma really better for console gaming? Looking at getting a 50"+ soon and was wondering about Plasma vs LCD vs LED.
I have not tried a console on my plasma, but what I can tell you is to guard against getting a "too big" TV. Remember the bigger the TV, the further away from the screen you should be situated. If you are too close to the TV (for its size) you end up seeing the pixels/LED's, which makes the quality not so good.
I'm sure a bit of Googling will give you the ideal TV size/distance ratios.

Thanks - currently I sit around 3.5m away from the TV (40" LCD).
Also - I've always been a Samsung fan and hesitant to go for another brand. Any recommendations of other brands if I did switch?

Hisense has come a long way from being the cheap and nasty option. I would look at them if the cost of a samsung is an issue.
I have had nothing but problems with sony though. Looks like samsung is the new sony.

Why is the comparison 1080p LCDs vs 720p plasma? Of course the plasma will be cheaper? The 47" 1080p LG LCD is R6999. Same price as the 50" 720p LG plasma. So the LCD actually looks cheaper considering the resolution.

Hardly a difference these days IMO, but it's a fact that plasma has faster response time and lower input lag.
Add that to the fact that plasma is cheaper for a bigger TV, and that makes it a winner IMO.
HD looks good on all HD TVs.

While ringing true about distance, I found this to be a gem. I bet you most people when hearing about "LED TVs" think that they have individual LEDs making up the front screen/pixels!
This is why it's important to stipulate LED backlit LCD. When people understand an LED TV (or 99% of them) is actually an LCD, LED sales will plummet. Marketing gimmick.

For plasma is it terrible with glare? I heard it's better to go LCD/LED if there is some light in the room?

Sure, if you consider resolution alone, which IMO is wrong. Contrast is generally more important than resolution though. Resolution is generally marketing gimmick because:
1) Most people don't have 1080p media, or very little of it
2) Most people sit outside the necessary close viewing distances needed for the full FHD experience

Mid-high end plasma have anti reflective coatings so they suffer less. With Samsung, only after Series 5 (I don't know about LG/Panasonic).
So a 4 Series 720p or 5 Series 1080p plasma wouldn't be good for a bright room, generally speaking. I'm talking quite a bit of direct sunlight, possibly even falling on the TV. Well positioned ambient lighting that brightens a room mostly isn't a concern, yes you will see lights if they fall in the reflective path of the plasma, yes the plasma will appear dimmer than LCD.
This is why it's important to not test in a mass mart store with 100s of watts of lighting and aisle viewing distances.

depends on the tv hey, i bought a samsung 46" and i sit about 1m away from it and it is crystal clear. I bought a plasma and at the same distance it was blurry and fuzzy.
For console and pc gaming you need to ensure the led's are not big but i can tell you that a samsung led with crystal clear and motion looks as good as any 23/24" monitor. Be very careful of hd ready stuff for console and pc, the pixels are huge and you need to sit far away. With 1080p you can sit about 1m away and it will look 100's provided you bought a samsung crystal led LOL
