Local VPN service providers

I recently decided to take my data security a bit more serious. I've trialled a few VPN service providers, but can't seem to find one with a SA-based server. I would prefer a local server for speed reasons. (I know UnoDNS has two in SA, but UnoVPN doesn't have a local presence).

ElephantVPN don't have presence in SA but I use the UK server and find it quick.

They also have technology where you can construct an end-to-end VPN network
which is rather nifty if you want to securely connect home to office etc.

OP what are you trying to achieve?

Just trying to use the web more securely - I'm not on a corporate network and want to be sure that connections to hosted servers are secure, browsing in public wifi is secure, etc. Not yet paranoid, but looking for easy ways to increase security. I've used Avast Secureline, UnoVPN and PrivateInternetAccess. All good in their own right, but local presence would be nice.

This is why I asked. The best solution is to create your own VPN. You can either buy a router with built in VPN server, or use the one which comes with windows.

If you leave your PC at home on 24/7 then do some research and open a port in your router and you're good to go!

I think he wants to find a hosted VPN solution (in SA) so that he can VPN out of his home network (and public networks), not vpn back to his home network... so why would he need to buy a router with a built in VPN server if he needs to VPN out, not in? Unless I'm missing something here...

He trusts his connection from his home network outward (and by extension inward as well) - like all of us doi.

So, bearing the above in mind. If he's sitting at the airport and wants to check out Facebook. He does the following.
1. Connect to the airport's free wifi
2. Then via that connects to his home network
3. His home network then connects to Facebook.

In the above scenario the connection between his laptop/tablet/phone and home network his highly encrypted using public-private key cryptography, thus no one are able to intercept his traffic.

My phone is permanently connected to my router at home through a VPN tunnel - mainly because of the DVR, but there's also some stuff which I need to control at home (SABNzb, couchpotato, etc)

If this is not what the OP intends to do, then I apologise profusely.

I indeed wanted a hosted solution, but if it isn't currently available then I will definitely try the own PC VPN solution. Probably worthwhile seeing what is available on Linux, so that I can host it and get friends to also use it for sharing cost. Thank you both.

Roll your own VPN with a Host1Plus VPS based in JHB. It's only going to cost you $2 a month - so why pay someone else 5x that etc.
