Hi

I would like to get an IP phone but it must have a number so people with in SA can phone me. I hear ICASA released the 087* as a VoIP number but can't find any one who offers this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mweb offers them but they're not accessible from outside the network - ie even if you have a number no one can call you from a landline, or cellphone, because there isnt a interconnection agreement. Maybe we'll see a change with neotel.

Hi,

The 087XXXXX numbers are available, but as bwana v.17 sez, you can't dial in yet. We hope to see this happen somewhere in October as we're waiting for the interconnects from Telkom, Vcom etc. Calls between 087 numbers are free, and you can call out to anywhere in the world. PM me and I'll give you more detail.

Please PM or email me and I will provide detailed info. Thanks

VOIP Providers

I've been looking for a good VOIP Provider and could only find a few.

The most promising is from VOIPSmart (www.voipsmart.co.za). They have a Pay as go Go offering while not the cheapest but if you don't use it then it costs you nothing and VOIP to VOIP is free where as VOX Telecom (http://www.voxtelecom.co.za/) apparently charge for calls VOIP to VOIP and VOIP to Telkom, MTN, Vodcacom, CellC and overseas and you pay a monthly fee.

If I-Burst manage to complete there 4 year rollout plan then they might be a good option since they will be launching a VOIP service soon as well. I-Burst plans to cover most cities and cover main highways.

I think they're accessible from overseas, just not from within SA. Doesn't help much I know but might in some situations.

087 numbers or more correctly the 2787 prefixes are not accessible from international or SA. Most ISP are in the final stages of interconnecting with Telkom (& Vodacom), so the numbers will be callable from them on a ISP by ISP basis, as they go active.
