Actually, prices will go up when seacom lands. All the networks will claim the cost of international traffic is now more because they have to pay insane amounts for Seacom whom is trying to cover its expense.
 
I posted a while back that we have been seeing articles on MYADSL saying that broadband would get cheaper for the past 2 years, nothing has happened.

We will continue at this slow pace for a long time to come...I do hope I am wrong.

It is sad, emerging markets around the world have benefited so much from cheaper telecommunications, we would be no different. The list of benefits is long. The list of people benefiting in our current situation is short - but they are loving it.
 
I've said this before - The SA Government is deliberately keeping telecoms prices and the cost of internet high (amongst other things) so that is is kept out of reach from the people who desperately need to be enlightened: The poor folk in the townships who blindly vote for them.

This for me is the crux of the matter. We, South Africans, allow them to do this to us. We give them the basis level of what they would charge us by doing nothing and just except things as they are. Yeah, we have/had no choice with TELKOM, all other players as well as the ANC in cahoots with each other. We biatch and complain and then get used to and accept it and move on to the next new basis level again. Corporate bussiness in South Africa knows it and thus exploits that to their max profiteering benefit.

I guess I am the odd one out then. I refuse to bear such high prices. As such I do not have a tel line at home (bin telkom free since 2003/4 so long ago now I forget the actual date) and all other "mobile" internet sukks big time. So much so, that I no longer have internet at home at all. I have stopped using pay as you go mobile data cards (hooked up via usb cable to my laptop.)

I have been internet free at home for 3 years (except for the 1 month last year when I tried pay-as-you-go data) - because the prices are just b l o o d y rediculous that I refuse to pay such extortion.

I now only connect at work. And I am a manager of a high profile web-dev team (Alt-X companies are our primary client base) ... Work have offered me a rebate on mobile home connection which I refuse to take up until the connection and usage prices COME DOWN ...

I have perfect signal at home for NeoConnect Prime, but that bluddy 24-month extortion racket must be removed before I will sign up, else I would have it in half a heart beat.

So what you really saying here is we all need to stop using all telecoms (BOYCOTT) until the prices become acceptable to us.

As the years pass by I read about new innovations around the world. People are using awesome new technologies and we're here moving forward like molasses. Once professionals realize how much they're being held back and decide to leave, then someone may learn a thing or two or not. Either way if you compare prices of just about everything in South Africa to other countries, you'll realize how much we're getting ripped off. Most of the stuff I buy now days is imported from either the US or Australia, and even with shipping it's cheaper -> can anyone say Xbox Games? Plus our broadband is so awesome that Microsoft wouldn't even bring Xbox Live here.

How else should they get funds for the 13 million odd welfare hand outs in the country where the majority is in KZN? :rolleyes: No wonder they are rated so "happy" compared to other provinces...

I think it's up to us MyBB users to actually do something. We are the biggest community of users that know what is going on in the Telecoms industry.

Not true.

VANS can now self provide, NeoTel, Vodacom, MTN, and a few others are already busy building national networks. Anyone of these should be able to provide the local infrastructure to link up to these cables - especially SeaCom as it is built on open access models...

The days of Telkom controlling the delivery in the country, is very limited, if not over already...

If it were limited, there'd be constructive and aggressive competition to compensate for it.
The only limitations that Telscum has ever had in place was the fact that they are (were) the monopoly and have had no regard for client service or Quality of Service.

As much as I'd like to, I can't share that sentiment.
It's going take another 5 to 10 years for anyone of us to start feeling like that.
Telscum has realised it's time of monopolistic fixed line raping is coming to an end.
That's why they've tried the media route, now with 3G.
At the moment with only 2 (3 if you count Neotel) major contenders to take the fight to them - we're a long way away from being rid of The Beast.
Their monopoly has allowed them to entrench themselves and brainwash the nation as having them as the only option.
But the last two generations of this country has hopefully woken up and once we can get sustainable alternatives to Telscum, we would hopefully take our money to those alternatives.

But that is still some time off.
