Hi guys,

I kindly ask of your knowledgeable information. Can you roam Mtn's network on the uncapped LTE contact? Also, if without an antenna I'm getting 2mbps download and 10mbps upload on both bands, will an antenna boost me at least upto 10mbps? My area only has up to 4mbps and it's so prone to line faults I've given up on it so anything 4mbps+ consistently I'm happy with.

I've brought my friends B315 home to try it out. It catches full 4 bars of signal on both bands but the speed is really slow. I'm honestly done with adsl, every single month since October last year I have line drops, they fix it, it starts dropping again next month, and there's no plans for fibre in the area so LTE is my only other option. So a consistent 10mbps and a nice low ping and I'm happy.

No roaming on MTN's network and no 3G failover.
An antenna will give you a boost in speed but cant say exactly what it will be.

Is it B315 from Telkom? If not, check full model number. You need support for LTE band 40 (TDD 2300MHz).

Here's where I stay, (marked with an x) and the circle where the nearest telkom tower is. Even on my phone I get full 4G signal but nothing above 4mbps download.

It is from telkom. My friend got that 50gb contract they had last month

Ah crap that's a bummer, there's a cell tower right next to my place.

I just want a 10mbps download and upload, and if an antenna can help me get that I'm definitely getting the deal.

Thats fine. Did you force 2300MHz band?
If router is from Telkom, you have band selection on the menu.

I did. I actually trialed both bands and I got the same speeds, probably testing at peak times isn't really ideal though.

With a directional antenna you shoulf be able to get other towers and see which one gives you the best speeds.

Also LTE-A can also be an option for you but the router is expensive and might not even give you the boost you looking for.

When changing bands and moving the router around taje note of the cell id to check how many you pick up.

I gave the router back so I'm unable to have another go at it, but you're right I may be able to pick up this other tower (see pic with x and circle) not too far away if the benoni one is congested (which I'm sure it is)

10mbps download should not be too hard with an antenna and providing you have good LoS and the tower you connect to is not too congested.
having the same upload speed though... that's something you might not get.

I've gotten better speeds before and I was further away from coverage than you so you should pick up reliable signal from where you are. External is always a nice to have it just improves the signal maybe not speed but signal quality will be better abd if it's directional you try and connect to diffirent towers by adjusting the antenna direction.

I do get full signal. I've used the stats for Huawei LTE routers app and it's showing excellent for all 4 signal calculations. It's just the speed that is really pathetic. Now I'm not really sure that the antenna will make a difference if you're saying that the antenna just catches better signal and does no improvements to the speed.

I'm thinking there's massive congestion on the benoni tower hence excellent reception but ****ty speeds. I guess my only option is to catch the leachville tower. What do you clever okes reckon? Am I correct?

Hi, just to confirm i am also thinking of getting the Telkom Lte uncapped R800pm, i stay in a area where there is no 4G signal(LTE band) for telkom but i do have have a prepaid sim and am on the smart wireless plan, i do pick up 3G only and get speeds of up to 11mb/s so im sure the LTE uncapped will work with 3G failover. If the modem does not pick up 4G, it should use 3G like our cellphones or am i wrong?

Prepaid works that way, some contracts do not, be warned.
