Hi

I got my LTE sim card today from Telkom but didn't buy the router. Thought I sommer use the sim in my cell phone. I've checked the coverage map and I am covered.

When I use my Vodacom and CellC sim in the phone, I get 4G, but as soon as I switch it with the Telkom one, it goes to H+ and I only get between 3 and 5mbs on a speedtest. Not sure what that means really... Do I have to use the Huawei router Telkom advertise with these LTE packages? Thanks!

No you don't have to use the modem. What's the specific deice and model as shown in device info?

My Telkom LTE SIM is my tablet that I use as a hotspot and it does LTE/4G

Thank you, was just making sure :) Don't have the info atm though... But tried the sim in a S4, S5 and Sony Experia and got the same results.

Kinda frustrating tbh as my ADSL line has been off since 8 of December and Telkom doesn't care to come out and fix it. Now it seems I have to deal with them once again regarding this too, oi!

It might be something to do with the LTE frequencies your devices have, my tablet came with another Telkom contract, but even then, at work sometimes its on 4G and other times on H+, some Telkom towers do seem to be a bit congested and I get 5 to 9mbps on speed tests most of the day.

Sounds like they haven't provisioned lte on the sim card yet. Alternatively you're not in a telkom lte covered area, maybe check in another suburb.

Tested it now 1.7km from me and got around 25mbps download and 10mbps upload.

There's a tower down the street from where I live, about 350m and got 12mpbs. Don't think it's a Telkom tower though. I was parked right next to it, so I"m sure my speed should have been a lot higher.

Changed to LTE late last night and early this morning... but speed stayed pretty much the same. I'm getting anything from 200KB/sec to 900KB/sec. Not really stable.

But I've also notice that when I download on LTE at 900KB/s, my browsing / streaming is awfully slow at times. On my 4meg DSL line I got around 450KB/s when downloading and the browsing stayed the same.

I would have stayed with LTE if I didn't had to pay R999 per month. I just don't think at those speeds a 100GB day / 100GB night is worth that kind off money. Considering switching to Wirulink at the end of the month.
