Lumia 920 Thread

I osted on MTNs Facebook page when they're going to release the 'Portico' update for WP8 (Lumia 920).

This is their reply:
MTN South Africa: Hi xxx, thanks for the message. Kindly note we don’t have date as to when the update will be released via the MTN Network. However, you can try to have the update done via the PC with a program called Nokia “ZUNE”.

WP8 is not even compatible with Zune!

@ Doc_Horrible
I have a few more reasons for the way WP 7 and 8 reboot after reading your interesting reply.

This rebooting thing is caused by a networks and not the device in my view. Why do I think so? These devices operate via a network on mobile data systems that at times lose network quality ie. high latency, slow to no through put on U/L and D/L and Packet loses within the mobile/radio system. When one or more of these things occur then your device shuts the U/L and D/L movement data door (Ring Fence) the device by rebooting as a safety mechanism. It must be remembered that with ANY data connection we have U/L and D/L handshaking operation(Radio Packets) , without this there can be no connection. If the networks will ever openly admit this is another story/forum topic for another day. This is just my 2 cents worth.

It must be remembered that the old Windows CE and Windows Mobile devices had their system files fully access able via USB cable to your PC, similarly the Android Devices. These older Windows devices at the time were more forgiving to poor Network systems low signal or good signal conditions, this opened the door to viruses and malware plus the ability to alter the open system files resulting in devices failing. This also happens to your Android devices as you stated.

Yes the source of the problem is most likely caused by a lack of reception, hence why its a lot worse when you are using LTE in SA due to the lack of proper coverage in most areas. However even if that is so my issue is with how the OS deals with the problem. Coming from my Galaxy S (1) running jelly bean I can say that its not a unique problem to windows phone 8. However the difference is how the OS will deal with it. On my lumia the phone reboots (not my issue) but then does not reactivate the SIM connection once done. On my galaxy S this also happens. However once it reboots it automatically will re-establish a cellular connection and operate as intended. If the nokia would just bloody vibrate like crazy when prompting for a pin (for a while) I would not have an issue with it. The lack of connectivity is.

In the new Windows Phone 7 and 8 the system files are not accessible (Ring Fenced) and designed to operate on a high quality network system closing down/rebooting to maintain device safety, opposite to the older Windows devices.
These are just my thoughts on this reboot issue and others might differ. That is why we have forums to debate peacefully and part company by accepting - Agree to disagree.

3 working days and my replacement lcd+glass is in the country from China and with the driver for delivery

Money saved: R1500.00
Time without a phone saved: 14 days

Vodacom - GFYS

i just hope it works :P

My phone has been stable for a while now. Did the update, still stable, until this morning.
It decided to turn itself off, so i missed my alarm.
Refused to charge or turn back on. Had to do a reset on it, lost the date but oddly not the time.

This is really starting to grind me

The alarm thing is what is frustrating me as it has a real impact on people. No one likes being late because their alarm does not work. I currently set an alarm on two phones to make sure I get woken up as its unlikely both will fail. (nokia and my samsung). I miss the days of the old nokia's which would switch on just so your alarm would go off if you powered it off :-/

Reminds me of that iOS bug in the one update where everyone's daylight savings in the US messed up.

But on a positive side the phone took some awesome low light videos and even sound from the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert on Saturday which I am amped about. Other than the odd random reboot (up to a bout 5 since I got the phone in December) I'm really loving the phone and the OS. There is nothing that I am missing from Android that is a deal breaker.

I would also like to point out most people are very impressed with the look and feel of the phone when they do see it for the first time. Even the apple fan boys. Would they move to WinPho 8? Probably not.

Another frustration is not being able to block numbers, major fail by the OS

R1389.72
+ R10 for a tamper screw driver from Communica

I could've done it for R800.00 if I was a little more patient and waited until they got unbranded digitizers in stock
They only have AT&T branded at the moment

Which is a bit of a joke considering what every Nokia repair centre and Vodacom want to charge

Speaking of screens - i've been very careful of mine, and only got one key scratch on the side.

Yesterday, i dropped my phone screen down from about a foot height, and it went sliding on the floor.
I now have 3 pit indentations/marks on the screen and a few more scratch marks on the middle.

The gorilla glass mark 2 is not quite cut out /as good as its meant to be.

any news on any covers or good screen protector that doesnt affect proximity sensor etc. ?

I'm also interested in screen protector and cover, but haven't been able to find one that looks decent and thin.

Might order one from wpcentral soon. Really don't want my phone scratched.

Finally got myself a Lumia 920
Really loving the phone but noticed 2 issues.

1. Back of fone gets very hot after about 20min of browsing the net etc. Just above the camera.
2. Battery drains quickly. NFC , Bluetooth, Locationa Services off / No 3rd party apps / All apps closed and even blocked some apps in background tasks.

Phone has latest Update according to Phone
MTN Phone

Anyone had the same issue and found a Solutions ?

tnx

It will take about one to two weeks for the phone battery to achieve optimal performance. I get just over a day with WiFi on, Bluetooth off, location on, about 10 minutes talk, couple of SMSs/WhatsApps, 30 minutes play, no internet.

As for heat, yes, it can get warm, but it's not an issue for me as I think it's normal. Just as long as it doesn't get too warm while it's in my pocket ...
