No , he is not.

I can assure you that he is an extremely capable gentleman with whom I had the honour of working with many, many moons ago!

Looking at this whole debacle, one think stands out like a sore thumb.

Murray & Roberts do not seem to have a credible "Crisis Management" Capability. This appears to be hurting their brand.
They don't even seem have a twitter account active. I am surprised that someone has not created one yet and abused it.

I suppose the question is this.
Are there any credible or specialist crisis management companies in the country that they could even consult.

Most big companies appear to have their own internal crisis management plans, usually linked to their risk management sections. Also lumped into that bucket was Business Continuity management...

Bridge collapse: Murray & Roberts to compensate victims & relatives

JOHANNESBURG - Construction company Murray & Roberts says all those who were affected in the M1 scaffolding collapse will be compensated.

Two people were killed this week, 23 others injured and six people are still in hospital with three in a critical condition when the structure collapsed across the M1 highway.

Murray & Roberts CEO Henry Laas says the company is determined to find out what happened and the victims will be taken care of.

“We will assist them in covering their costs. As far the funerals of the two deceased, we are in contact with the families and we will provide the necessary support there as well.”

Officials re-opened the highway on Thursday after it was closed in both directions as construction workers cleared the rubble.

The battle to save Bryce

Johannesburg - When Bryce Carlinsky failed to arrive home as usual from work, his mother went into panic mode.

Worried, Rose Carlinsky bombarded her son with phone calls and SMSes wanting to know his whereabouts.

But Bryce, 19, never responded, sending his mom into a state of near hysteria.

Unbeknown to Rose, Bryce was trapped under a huge steel pole on the M1 in Sandton after the scaffolding of a bridge that was under construction collapsed on the taxi he was travelling in.

While it took paramedics hours to free Bryce from the wreckage, he was lucky to survive. Two people, including the driver of the taxi, were killed and 21 others injured.

The taxi driver was “killed almost instantly as a beam from the bridge pierced him in the chest”, according to Joburg Emergency Management Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

At the time of the incident, Bryce was returning from his workplace in Sandton, where he is employed as a call centre agent. He was seated in the front of the taxi with a colleague when the scaffolding collapsed on the taxi.

After battling to get hold of Bryce, Rose received a call from her other son Tremaine around 7pm, explaining what had happened.

Tremaine told Rose to watch the news, which she did.

The sight of the taxi trapped under a giant scaffolding with the top part cut off and surrounded by paramedics left Rose shell-shocked.

“I was crying the whole night,” she said on Thursday, speaking from her Vrededorp home.

“I couldn’t wait to go to the hospital and see what was happening. I cried when I saw Bryce because, after seeing that pole, you would not think that he would survive. I thank God for putting His hand on my son,” she said.

According to the family, Bryce’s injuries included bleeding on the brain, a fractured pelvis and head injuries.

The family said doctors had told them that Bryce would never walk properly again.

At the moment, he was in an extremely critical condition, they said. He remained in an induced coma at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

At the time of the accident, Rose was planning to throw a 20th birthday party for Bryce on Tuesday next week.

Very definitely looks and sounds like a capable gentleman, just a bit misguided on Parks Tau's motives for being on the scene of the tragedy and for delaying the opening of the freeway.

Very possibly but then for some folks to launch into his personality crosses the line of being respectful on the forum.

i.e. play the ball...

Completely agree,

Apologies daniellgr, some of us just feel very strongly about the leadership in this country and their motives for doing things that impact the population directly.

Johannesburg - Murray & Roberts, the company responsible for the construction of the pedestrian and cycle bridge which collapsed in Sandton, said it would contribute to the funerals of the two people who were killed in the incident.

Murray & Roberts CEO Henry Laas said on Thursday the company would also be assisting those in hospital with medical costs.

The support structure of the bridge, which runs along the M1 across Grayston Drive, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon shortly before the afternoon rush, injuring about 20 people when it crushed vehicles making their way past the bridge.

The road was closed following the incident and was officially re-opened by mayor Parks Tau on Thursday at about 14:30.

Murray & Roberts said it had appointed technical, engineering, legal and forensic specialists to probe the incident.

While the cause of the collapse was not immediately clear, Gauteng transport MEC Ismail Vadi said there were no reports of structural damage to the road.

Where have you seen this? What have you done to resolve it?

In a telco project with 1200 sites, around 800 were done by 6 different contractors were affected. We commissioned horizontal drillings to assess the quality which was way under the contractual one. They had to redo almost all the 800 sites from scratch at their cost.

I've also seen it in a power station refurbishment, same story.

And last one, I was having dinner at a project manager's flat close to Shanduka new HQ. We were commenting that the concrete foundations of the building were left to dry without any cover for close to two days with pouring rain which is usually not the smartest way...

I would think the correct thing to do is to now stop all this nonsense and wait for the official reports to be released.

There are 4 separate investigations under way; the Dept of Labour (OHSA matters), The Main Contractor investigation, The Jo'burg Council investigation, and the ECSA investigation ( dealing with whether a Registered Professional Engineer was involved and if so, this investigation will then deal with competency issues etc).

There is absolutely no point in trying to continue creating issues for anyone to comment on.

I think for once, the senior authorities have shown commitment and their direct involvement should be welcomed. Instead we have people here prepared to criticise for the sake of criticising. If I was CEO, I would also want to inspect the road myself before allowing anyone on the road. It shows a level of commitment to the city and its residences not often seen in SA. So what if that meant a slight delay in getting the road open again. Better to be sure than sorry afterwards. Imagine if something else happens at the exact same point in a few hours! Imagine the outcry then .....

And most likely court investigations ordered by the prosecution and independent expertises from the families of the deceased and the injured.

Dept to release prelim bridge collapse report in 7 days

JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Labour says it expects to release its preliminary report into the M1 scaffolding collapse within seven days and has appealed to the affected families to be patient.

Two people died and more than 20 others were injured when the structure collapsed trapping several cars on Wednesday.

Families of the injured and deceased have called on authorities to speed up investigations.

Murray & Roberts is responsible for that construction and has also launched its own probe.

Department spokesperson Mokgadi Pela said, “Our investigators are collecting evidence, they’ve spoken to a whole range of people now and they have to consolidate the report. That is why we are saying we want to give them enough time to get the report ready. They’ve indicated to us that [it will be ready] within a week.”

Wow...this video kinda annoys me.

That woman they drag out from under the collapsed bridge. Like you're still in danger woman! Get hold of yourself and MOVE!

You do realise she's screaming "my son.. my son..." ... from what I understand it was her son that was killed that was stuck in the car... hence why she couldn't "get hold of" herself :(

I hate useless contractors like that, who undermine the good quality work that other contractors do.

Why did it go so far before they realised poor quality concrete was used? Every job I have been on, we submit 7 day concrete cube results and 28 day results. You can quickly see at the 7 day results if your 28 day strengths are going to be out of spec. Can't understand why 75% of the work was allowed to get to that point.

As soon as you start the job, the RE comes in and assumes everything you do and will try to do is wrong. Its because of those types of contractors.

Once took over a job from another contractor. They had constructed aseries of ground beams for the walls. The beam was designed as a reinforced concretw beam 500mm deep. He had used 19mm stone for the bottom 400mm and 100mm concrete on the top to make it look like he had cast the beam the full depth ... not even sure what quality concrete he had used.
