No , he is not.

I can assure you that he is an extremely capable gentleman with whom I had the honour of working with many, many moons ago!

Very possibly but then for some folks to launch into his personality crosses the line of being respectful on the forum.

i.e. play the ball...

I certainly hope that I did not offend daniellgr. I was discussing the issue, certainly did not intend to offend him. Apologies if any offence was taken danielllgr.

Thousands mourn bridge collapse victim

Durban - family, friends and staff of businessman Adrian Doodnath, 28, gathered to bid him farewell on Saturday in a Jehovah’s Witness ceremony in Mount Edgecombe.

He was one of two Durban men killed when a pedestrian bridge collapsed in Sandton, Joburg last week.

At the funeral, his wife of five years, Chantel, and mother, Indrani, were inconsolable.

Doodnath was with his wife, mother, father Ashley Doodnath, and cousin Jason Perumal when the Toyota Fortuner in which they were travelling was crushed by the bridge.

Doodnath’s wife and mother were unhurt, but his father and cousin were injured.

According to Doodnath’s uncle, Aubrey Kemraj, the family travelled to Joburg for business at 6am on Wednesday.

“After two early meetings, they decided to have lunch. They had one more business meeting to go and then they were going to call it a day. They decided instead to postpone their meeting so they could avoid the Joburg traffic, but then tragedy struck,” he said.

I hate useless contractors like that, who undermine the good quality work that other contractors do.

Why did it go so far before they realised poor quality concrete was used? Every job I have been on, we submit 7 day concrete cube results and 28 day results. You can quickly see at the 7 day results if your 28 day strengths are going to be out of spec. Can't understand why 75% of the work was allowed to get to that point.

As soon as you start the job, the RE comes in and assumes everything you do and will try to do is wrong. Its because of those types of contractors.

Once took over a job from another contractor. They had constructed aseries of ground beams for the walls. The beam was designed as a reinforced concretw beam 500mm deep. He had used 19mm stone for the bottom 400mm and 100mm concrete on the top to make it look like he had cast the beam the full depth ... not even sure what quality concrete he had used.

I think there were too many tests to be done with hundreds of sites all over the country and it was deemed totally inefficient and extremely costly compared to the pure only concrete works value. So we gave it a try and the contractors took advantage of it.

I've only been involved to recover the damages so I'm not too sure about the technical details of the story !

M1 bridge collapse findings to be released next week

JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Labour says it has concluded its investigation into the M1 scaffolding collapse and is now discussing the findings with the relevant stakeholders.

Last week, two people died and more than 20 were injured when the structure caved in trapping several cars.

The department had committed to releasing a preliminary report yesterday but now says it will only be made public next week.

Grayston bridge collapse probe will take at least 6 months

Thomas Hartleb, News24

Pretoria – The labour department’s inquiry into the M1 bridge collapse that killed 2 people will take at least 6 months to complete.

“We have already started preparations for the formal inquiry. We are looking at anything from 6 months,” the labour department’s chief inspector Tibor Szana told reporters in Pretoria.

Evidence was being collected and many parties would be involved in the probe. The structure’s engineering drawings were among the factors the inquiry would take a close look at, he said.

The people who would form part of the department’s inquiry were still being appointed.

Szana would not comment on speculation that a cement truck crashed into the structure, causing it to topple.

“At this stage of the game we are not pointing a finger at anyone," he said.

The inquiry was intended to be a neutral forum that would gather evidence. This would be presented to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision on whether someone could be criminally charged.

The scope of the inquiry would include the roles played by the City of Johannesburg, which commissioned the bridge, construction company Murray & Roberts, and the materials used.

The structure collapsed onto the M1 at Grayston Drive around 15:30 on Wednesday, October 14. The driver of a minibus taxi and a man in a Toyota Fortuner were killed. Nineteen people were injured. Three of them were still in a critical condition in hospital, the department’s deputy director general Aggy Moiloa said.

The scaffolding that collapsed was a support structure for what was intended to be a pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting Alexandra and Sandton.

This is normal. Most major accident reports can months if not in some cases, years. Some airline crash reports can take years to conclude.

Yes its normal.

Preliminary report looks at sequences of events, possible contributing factors and scope for full investigation work.

Full investigation work will include more detail, engineering analysis, recommendations. This takes long because it will look at design and compliance. It will also form bases of legal action, insurance claim etc.

The delay is not unusual especially given that there were fatalities and mechanism of failure maybe more complex than originally thought.

Usually lawyers, insurance, expect engineers are the one who will delay the process through requests for extensions.

City of Joburg pushing for M1 bridge construction to resume

JOHANNESBURG – Despite an ongoing investigation into the deadly bridge collapse near the Grayston Drive off ramp in Sandton last month, the City of Joburg says it’s committed to completing the structure.

Work on the bridge was immediately suspended when the scaffolding fell on a group of motorists, killing two people.

One person remains in hospital, while 18 others are still receiving counselling.

The Johannesburg Development Agency has been given permission to proceed with the construction on condition the Labour Department oversee the process.

Construction companies close for the year. What do you want them to do?

Terms of reference set for M1 bridge inquiry

JOHANNESBURG - The labour department has set the terms of reference for its inquiry into the collapse of bridge scaffolding on the M1 highway near Grayston drive.

The department has met with all relevant stakeholders to brief them on how the inquiry will be unfolding.

In October, two people were killed and 19 others injured when the scaffolding of a pedestrian bridge collapsed.

Presiding commissioner Lenny Samuel says the department has compiled a list of those who must participate in the inquiry.

“We have identified the Johannesburg municipality as the client, secondly the Johannesburg Development Agency as well as Murray & Roberts infrastructure.”

Grayston Bridge collapse: Two injured in final stages of recovery

JOHANNESBURG – Construction company Murray & Roberts says two of the 19 people injured in the Grayston Bridge collapse are still in the final stages of recovery.

In October, two people were killed while 23 others were injured when the structure collapsed across the M1 highway.

The company, which is being investigated for its part in the tragedy, has assisted with some of the victims' medical and funeral costs.

Murray & Roberts’ Ed Jardim says two patients are in the final stages of their rehabilitation.

“Two of the injured are in a rehabilitation programme, it’s just to assist in the final stages.”

He says the remaining 17 victims have recovered well following medical treatment.

“We assisted the recovery of the 19 people who were injured and they have been released from hospital.”
