Macbook Air local pricing announced

Normally I am the defender of the pricing but comparing it to the UK store it is about R1000 more expensive than the UK price whereas the Macbook Pro is about R300 different.

I thought it would be between R15000 and R16000, guess we all get a chance to be wrong.

Hmmmm, 17 grand for something that has no ethernet port, no optical drive and only one USB port? Yeah I don't think so.

Hell, Sony brought out the VAIO X505VP in 2004. It was lighter, 21mm at the thickest point and had more features than the Macbook Air.

Oh wait, it doesn't run OSX. My bad.

How is that a relevant comparison?

If this thing is so light and thin, transport costs should be lower and the price lower in turn.

No ethernet? I havent used ethernet on my laptop in the last 6 months come to think of it the optical on my laptop is also largely unused. I wouldnt mind if both were available externally (like they are with the MBA).

Price imo is excessive but travellers and commuters are probably going to eat this thing up. Heck - if I was still doing the 100 mile commute into London I used to do I'd consider it myself.

BTW according to that review that sony X505VP was almost r28k.

Is this becoming a site to promote all things Mac or what? The 64Gig solid state drive will put you out of pocket $999. I just don't think it's worth it.

The Fujitsu Q2010 is only 0.5 mm thicker than the MacBook Air and weighs 1 kg (and comes with a lot more features).

How is it not?

Let me rephrase. Sony made a laptop, the VAIO-X505VP in 2004, that is 2mm thicker at it's thickest point (21mm) than the Macbook Air (19.4mm). This specific laptop from Sony weighed less than the Macbook Air. The Macbook Air has no optical drive, the VAIO-X505VP had one. The Macbook Air has no Ethernet port, the VAIO-X505VP had one.

And only one USB port??? There's gonna be some selective usage for that one. Do you plug in a external optical and forget about that nice mouse you were using? Sorry, one USB port is not enough.

The point or comparison I'm trying to make is that the ultra thin extremely portable laptop has been done before..... and done better. What makes this one so special?

[sarcasm on]

[sarcasm off]

Granted. The Ethernet thing is not such a big problem since wireless is becoming more readily available, even here in SA. As for the optical...... one USB port remember?

You are absolutely correct Bwana the X505VP would have set you back almost R28.......... in 2004. Actually the X505VP isn't even made anymore. But then that's not the point I'm trying to make now is it.

Well for starters, the sony laptop had a 10inch screen didn't it? So you may as well compare it to the mac book pro or any other unrelated laptop you could think of.

But then that's not the point I'm trying to make now is it.

What point are you trying to make? Do you even know?

Well, i`m sure it'll serve it's purpose.
It's not being marketed as an alternative to a macPro, or Deeper Blue, or...

I'm sure it will serve it's purpose. I just can't understand why this specific laptop is coveted above all others. All it is Apple marketing working overdrive again.

Sure it looks good....... and what? It's really really thin. Well done. Good for you guys. You've made a really really thin laptop that's shiny and very pretty. And for thousands, if not tens of thousands, will pay R17 000 for it.

I rofled.

The specs page for the X505VP say it also has/had an external optical drive.

The point he was trying to make is that the pomp and circumstance being afforded the Mac book Air has less to do with the capabilities of the machine and more to do with the fact that it's an Apple Product.

There are other flat notebooks out there that have been done better, period.

O....... K.......

I'll rephrase again.

Hmmmm, I wonder what this has to do with anything? But in any case you are correct the specific laptop I chose for a comparison does indeed have 10" screen.... indeed. The Macbook Air has a 13.3".

So effectively Sony created a smaller laptop with more features four years ago.

What point are you trying to make? Do you even know?

My point or lets rather say the question I am forced to ask is this:

What makes the Macbook Air so special?

I'll rephrase once more before I'm stuck in a meeting till three, just in case.

What makes the Macbook Air so special in the world of ultra thin ultra portable noetbooks/laptops?

You may as well compare it to a pda in that case.

I'm not sure what you mean by "so special" . Some people like it, some people don't. Some people will buy it, others wont.

I guess from Apple's point of view its "special" because its got a large screen and full keyboard but still is portable.

Personally its not for me and I wouldn't consider buying one but I still not sure why its got your panties in such a knot. I would guess that your panties are so knotted because of the amount of coverage it got while *insert your favorite brand*'s products don't get the same.

Honestly, is that something worth getting in a huff about?

...come to think of it the optical on my laptop is also largely unused...

Yeah, I only really use my optical drive when I'm playing games.

*Pause*

Oh yeah, it's a Mac. No games. I see why they left it out :D
