You won’t get a 16Gb RAM M2 Air anymore (unless you go used/refurbished)

The M1 and M2 models are “old gen” because M3 is the current series, but still on the market in 8Gb guise as cheaper options, sort of like the iPhone 13 that’s still available but not the 13 Pro.

For what you described, it will be more than enough. Even the M1 Air can do more than that.

Digicape has the M2 Air for R19,199 at the moment, if another R800 discount is of interest to you.

Define “something”? They have Mac Madness at the moment, so except for Black Friday there’s not really much time left for other promotions, seeing November is close.

Will it be cheaper on Black Friday? It’s a 50/50 chance, normally there are better cellular deals available around Black Friday. With November so close, I doubt it, but I may be wrong.

You would probably be able to pick up an M2 for cheaper when the M4 series comes out, because then it could perhaps take the M1’s place as the ultra budget option (and the M3 then takes the M2’s current “position”)

I am speculating, of course.

Rumours have it that the M4 lineup expected to be announced next month will not include the Air, which will come out only early next year.

In case you missed my comment in one of my posts above, Digicape has the M2 Air for R800 less than iStore at the moment
 
It may be worth waiting a bit and looking into the new Intel Core ultra (series 2) chips. Early reviews looks amazing.

I have an 8GB M3 (courtesy of FNB) and haven't had a moment's issue. Don't get hung up by the windows people complaining about Mac specs. That's like race car drivers complaining that your 4x4 has too much tread on the tyres. Different systems require different specs.

8gb should be fine for your use case - IMO the travesty is a 250gb drive in anything other than a phone these days.

You're moving RAW photos and videos. For regular users 250GB is surprisingly much. And if you couple that with some decent cloud storage it's unlikely to ever be a problem.

Yes.

I have a few hundred in the field and it’s a non-issue.

The only time this is a problem is with Engineers running and testing containers locally and even then the real issue is storage before memory.

The 1tb I have in my M1 is barely enough for me. That said the 250gb in my mother's isn't nearly enough and she doesn't do any of that. It's a nightmare when it comes time to upgrade her OS.

It's time Apple made the jump to 500 because the time might come when you realise that 250 isn't enough and you can't do jack about it.

Cloud is great if you don't need the data and if you're happy paying for it, for ever.

You know how many had issues updating for a lack of space? Exactly 1.

Your use case is an outlier.

8GB/256GB is the right price point for the right use case of the vast majority of people.

When you go beyond it most can’t afford it anyway and the point becomes moot.

People buying these aren’t doing so to enable themselves to make money as is your use case. Ergo, going larger doesn’t pay for itself.

I'd be curious to know what your mom has on her machine. I just looked now, I'm currently using 87GB on mine, 158GB free.

It's the right price point because Apple has convinced you it is by making it their cheapest offering. I can guarantee you that you wouldn't complain about 500gb if they were offering it at the same price point.

I know plenty of people with the 250gb drive and they complain about the lack of space.

A Macbook is an expensive computer anyway. You might as well save a bit longer and get the M3 machine with 16Gb of ram. Will last you much longer.
