Have a look on FB for The MacMan in Centurion. He sells pre-owned items, and often has mid-2012 units in stock. I assume these are units people sell because that have upgraded.

Thanks! Will check this out..

You are going to do so much fudging to get windows applications to run. Why not get a normal laptop, with windows, for much much less?

Parallels

His main use is for windows applications. Why get a Mac?

The OP said "I was also hoping to install a software like Parallels to handle the windows stuff i really need to do , basically just for Internet Explorer for some internal sites etc."

When looking at pricing also, I would want a good solid laptop that would last me at least a couple of years to be honest. I've also gotten accustomed to Dell machines because of their warranties etc but for specs that are similar to Apple MacBook Pro's and within similar price ranges I thought why not Mac.

It also looks like Macs have a better build quality as well. I'm gonna try and get one to use for work for a couple of days, see how the transition is before committing to one though

It sounds like some people have had problems, but I've always found Parallels works well and is not hard to use. I have Windows XP, Windows 8.1, three installations of Ubuntu and an OSX VM. The XP one is for a couple of pieces of old software I occasionally need and that simply refuse to work in any newer version of Windows (and yes, I've tried them on a Windows PC using compatibility mode). On Windows 8.1 I have microcontroller compilers, some circuit simulation software and the host software for an oscilloscope. Ubuntu VMs are specific development environments set up for particular Linux-based projects. The OS X one is so that I can experiment with potentially destructive changes and test OS X software without impacting the main system.

Now I could of course do much of that with Windows as the host, but I prefer using OS X overall, and I'd still want a Windows 8.1 VM because it works well to keep something set up for particular purposes.

Regarding future proofing...

If you spend R20k on a laptop now, how long it should it last you? 3 years? 5 years?

Consider the alternative - spend R10k on a laptop now, and in 3 years time, spend another R10k. The amount you spend will be the same, but, a 2018 R10k laptop will be much better than a 2015 R20k laptop.

Look at the specs of high end laptops from 2012 to see what I mean.

Have you ever kept track of Apple/Mac depreciation?

Well if I am going for a new laptop, no matter which one, I would want to keep it for at least 5 years

My current laptop is a Dell from 2011 or so I think, specs are quite good compared to nowadays laptops, except still outdated taking into consideration the fact that you can only put in so much of RAM in it, or newer models have the same processor but upgraded to the newest version of them.
