MacOS Monterey

So I finally pulled the trigger on an M1 MacBook Air today, first time ever owning a Mac and experiencing MacOS, etc.

Got Big Sur out of the box so wanted to know if you guys recommend updating to Monterey - I see all the complaints about battery life, performance etc and do not want to run into troubles if one should rather wait for an update.

How often does MacOS get incremental updates? And can one upgrade to a higher version of Big Sur or did that possibility fall away when Monterey was released?
I only get mine on Tuesday :o

Running High Sierra on my current machine so I'm going to keep it on Big Sur for a while and avoid the bugs.

No issues on Monterey here, but then again it's a casual device so I don't rely on many apps for any workflows of sorts.

Battery life seems as good still, and stability is also on par with Big Sur.

I'm loving Monterey.

Still on an Intel Pro... Haven't noticed any battery issues but the machine is definitely snappier on Monterey.

Big Sur is done now. Apple stopped signing it and rolling-back isn't a thing.

As far as updates go, there's the annual OS update and the odd incremental update during the year. Usually security related but Safari will update every now and then too.

Rolling back? Just reinstall, or easier still, restore from a back up?
In 1984, Don Henley released an album called Building the Perfect Beast. Track one, and the biggest hit off the album, was The Boys of Summer.

The lyrics in the bridge go:

Out on the road today
I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said
"Don't look back, you can never look back"

... anyway, what I'm saying here is, don't look back, you can never look back (unless you're still running Aperture). ;)

I'm personally waiting until they release an update or two for Monterey, seems there are some issues

You will love it - loving mine so far despite having to learn MacOS from scratch. Boot time is amazing…sitting here in complete darkness (loadshedding) and with nothing better to do, I timed the startup - 16 seconds until I could enter my password, and another 12 seconds until the OS was fully loaded and ready to go

Waking up from sleep mode is instant.

What colour are you getting?

I had some performance issues as posted in here, but it was probably the indexing as someone suggested here as the lag went away after some time. Also I have 2015 MBA, so not as fast as what you have anyway.

Thanks - I'm looking forward to it - I murdered my previous macbook (2013 MBP 15") trying to replace the battery in December.

Got this one in Space Grey. It's sitting at my dad's house, along with a few iPhone 13s, waiting for him to get here next week.

Looking at a refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Air M1 with 8‑Core CPU and 8‑Core GPU with 16GB ram and a 1TB SSD1 - for $1,399.00 (R21k).

Never really a bad idea IMO.

Glad to hear some users are having no issues with Monterey. Will see how things go but I think I will wait for an incremental update or two before moving over to Monterey.

My Air had Big Sur 11.3.1 installed out of the box, when I checked under system updates, it of course offered Monterey to me, but then also the option to update to the last Big Sur update, 11.6.1, which was released on the same day as Monterey it seems. So I updated to that, and happy that I now have the latest Big Sur version running.

Also went for the Space Grey…it was that or nothing! The silver is iconic but yeah, boys and their toys!

Would have loved the 16Gb RAM version but had to settle for the entry level 8Gb/256Gb storage and 7-core GPU…these things are expensive…but at least from what I could gather by researching is that this entry level model can hold it’s own and performs quite decent already, it is really excellent value for money.

Mine's an Apple Refurb so I got it at a really good price.

From what I read though the gains of the 8 cores and 16gb of ram are not overwhelming - for me it was the drive space. Everything else just came included with that.

Welcome to MacOS :giggle:.

Apple generally have a major OS release once a year, then you have the occassional security / bug fix update throughout the year.

I upgraded to a 14" M1 a week ago (from a 2014 MacBook Pro), which came pre-loaded with Monterey - it did however update to 12.0.1 in the first day of getting it.

So far no issues, battery life is great.

Let me know if you have any other questions related to MacOS / Monterey

Busy downloading Monterey and before I pull the trigger on the install button I want to see what everyone else thinks about it now. How has your experience been?

I'm on a 2017 MBP Core i7 with 16gb ram and 512gb hdd.

Currently Big Sure has an issue where the mouse cursor is choppy when my external display is connected (DP to Dell 32" 4k)

Noticing quite a bit of lag in Capture One 21.
