macOS Sonoma

Also wasn't it the case that a few years ago you could run iOS apps on M1 Macs? They did away with that, didn't they?

I think it depends on the developer to make that option available at the end of the day. I can only download some of my iPhone/iPad apps on macOS. And sadly none of the ones I actually want

No - it's still there when you search for an app on the app store.

Still very much there, but only if the developer of the app allows it.

This is another thing that gets me with Mac OS, it is so much more open, it is almost like the Apple that make iOS, iPad OS and Watch OS is a completely different Apple to the one that makes Mac OS

Then again, I guess when Apple developed their mobile OSes they felt the need to lock them down due to the more messy situation in mobile at the time in terms of getting software, the landscape was far less established and lacked refinement versus desktop.
I'm sure if Apple could have locked it down they would have liked to. Fortunately the app store only arrived on the scene in 2011, ten years after the first OSX.

After quite a bit of contemplating I've put in an order for my next laptop: 14" M3 Pro base model (M3 Pro chip). This will easily give me 5 years of use. To be honest, an M2 Air with 16GB of memory and 512GB HDD would have been fine for my workload, but due to their absolutely inane upgrade prices it just is not worth it, and there is just no way the M3 Air will be a step up in the base specs department, so you're going to be left with the same pricing ladder problem.

It was £200 off on Amazon, also why custom spec are not worth it as they hardly never get discounted.

Nice - I'm seriously considering a refurbished 15" M2 MBA with 1tb/16gb - cost after tax would be less than a 512gb/8gb from Core.

A refurb M2 Air with 512/16gb was quite hard for me to find in the UK. I did find some though but what swayed me in the end was Amazon's £200 discount. It was nice to see they also offer you to split the payment into 6 months interest free.

And now that I have it in my hands: the Space Black looks amazing.

We have a much bigger selection available in the US than the UK. My mom still gets her refurbs via Apple UK even if she has to wait longer to get it.

EDIT: that space black looks pretty sweet but I always slap a shell on mine.
