The Mahindra XUV 3XO Panel Van has quietly hit SA, pitched as an alternative to a half-tonne bakkie. And, rather unusually, it’s slightly more affordable than its predecessor…
The Mahindra XUV 3XO Panel Van has quietly joined the Indian automaker’s light-commercial vehicle (LCV) range in South Africa, priced slightly below its predecessor.
Based on the recently launched XUV 3XO crossover, the panel-van derivative – which we suspect is converted locally either at Mahindra’s special fitment centre near Kempton Park or at its soon-to-be-replaced assembly facility in KwaZulu-Natal – sees the local line-up swell to 9 variants.
From what we understand, the new 2-seater XUV 3XO 1.2T MX1 Panel Van is priced at R296 999, making it R6 000 more affordable than the XUV300-based version it replaces (which had last been priced at R302 999). It thus slots neatly into the middle of the broader XUV 3XO portfolio.
Pitched at would-be buyers of a half-tonne bakkie (a segment that fizzled out locally with the demise of the Nissan NP200 earlier this year), the XUV 3XO Panel Van employs the same turbocharged 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine as the rest of the range, here sending 82 kWand 200 Nm to the front axle via a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Looking for a compact SUV priced under R300,000? Here are 5 great options
No longer the preserve of wealthy adventurers harbouring fantasies of winching Land Rovers out the mud while out-manoeuvring piranhas and pit vipers in the Amazon Jungle, SUVs are now available in all shapes and sizes, with one to suit just about any budget or preference.
Granted most of them are not proper off-roaders, so hold onto those Camel Trophy fantasies for now, but the fact is there are now more options than ever for those seeking a high-riding vehicle at the budget end of the market.
It’s not surprising that SUVs are currently the most popular vehicle type in South Africa, accounting for 51.8% of the market so far in 2024, and they’re surely set to gobble up an even bigger slice of the pie going forward, given that a number of new models have entered the space beneath R300,000 in recent months.

REVIEW: Mahindra XUV 3XO is really great value, but there are a few niggles
Performance and economy
A unique selling point is that the 3XO is the only turbocharged SUV in the sub-R300,000 segment, if you ignore the Citroen C3 1.2T, which is not really an SUV anyway. But this is a real bonus for those of us living at altitude, as it doesn’t lose up to 17% of its power at Joburg elevations like its normally aspirated compatriots do.
But with the 3XO tipping the scales at 1,389kg, it is heavy for a vehicle of its size and thus performance is adequate rather than zesty. Thanks to its three-cylinder layout the engine also sounds quite thrummy, but gear-changes are well executed and we really appreciate that Mahindra fitted a proper six-speed torque converter gearbox to the auto versions, rather than one of those droney CVTs or jerky AMTs that are common at this level.
Oh, and there are three drive modes - Zip, Zap and Zoom - which are easily toggled via a button on the centre console.
Fuel economy was reasonably good, especially considering the car’s weight, with our test unit sipping an average of 7.8 litres per 100km.
Is the 3XO worth buying?
There are a few niggles, but with its funky looks, vast range, generous equipment and bargain pricing at the lower end of the range, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a vehicle you simply cannot ignore if you’re shopping at the more affordable end of the SUV segment.
