Major MetroFibre FTTH outage

Fibre network operator (FNO) MetroFibre was hit by a major network outage affecting numerous fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) customers in at least four provinces on Friday, 23 February 2024.

According to reports on outage tracking website Downdetector, customers first noticed problems with their Internet connectivity on MetroFibre's network sometime between 05:30 and 06:00.

Not had any significant issues on RAIN, and it is issues like this that niggle, when I consider moving to Fiber.

You must not use the Internet and use your modem as a heater.

Internet gets used too much, but my impression, is there are too many single points of failure, and they break just a little too often.

But end of the day even on RAIN, it has to get on fiber somewhere. So I dunno, maybe I just been lucky.

My Huawei router would make a poor heater anyhow.

I've had way less down time on Fibre than any wireless service I've every had. Telkom LTE, RAIN, MTN and even Bronberg WISP (Herotel now). They all had a lot of issues.

I have had very few outages on RAIN, and none where significant periods. What bugd me a little, is in the morning I run at 500 + Mbps, and the evenings it drops to about 40 - 50, which is enough to keep every one happy, but would prefer to have a smaller variation between swings. Something that fiber would give.

This. Our complex whatsapp group is regulary flooded with outage messages. Only Metrofibre is available to the complex. There was a period where OpenServe indicated that our complex is marked for future connection, but 4 years later, it still has not happened. Currently on Supersonic LTE Home without issues.

We are expecting Frogfoot to go live, at our complex end of next month. Would have prefered Openserve - not that I think Openserve is all that better, than Frogfoot, but yeah - any FNO, is better than none.
