Make the right broadband choice

I didn't say it was unshaped but was commenting on the way you concluded it was "heavily shaped" from your reading of the disclaimer. I can assure you from experience that is not the case and it compares more than favourably with the "capped, shaped" accounts offered by the other major ISPs.

If you say so Im more than happy to hear it, but what do you mean by favourably. What speeds do you typically get on things like torrents, steam and file servers. Are we looking at 40kbps on a 384 line, or 10kbps?

btw if you trace back the original argument, the comparison was between a 4gig unshaped account and a 30 gig shaped account. Not between other isp shaped accounts, so im interested to hear about those comparisons.

@ave

Ground rules - I'm not looking for a "mine is better than yours" debate here I'm essentially ISP agnostic but TI takes a lot of unwarranted stick, probably due to being confused with Telkom who supply the infrastructure for most fixed line ISPs, so here goes.

You ask:

If you say so Im more than happy to hear it, but what do you mean by favourably - usually better than the other ISPs capped offerings.

What speeds do you typically get on things like torrents, steam and file servers - can't comment on steam but generally max on other protocols obviously limited by upload speed over VPNs..

Are we looking at 40kbps on a 384 line - don't use 384 lines, minimum 1Mbs but most clients 4Mbs up

Just for fun I fired up a Windows 8 iso download on my 6Mbs line (with 7 VPN tunnels open):

Not too shabby I'll think you'll agree.

Telkom's Capped ADSL offerings are very reasonable, but only if you make use of the Local Data as well.
There are a lot of people who don't make use of the Local Data, or don't know how to, in which case
their prices aren't so great.

I had a Do2 (Currently 10GB + 20GB Local) account until Oct 2011, the fact is, using Telkom's Local Data
has it's downfalls:

1. Your blended data must be capped before you can start using your local data.

2. Once your blended data is Capped, if you want to browse international sites, you either have to Topup
at an exorbitant rate, or have an additional Capped account with another ISP as a backup.

3. News Servers are heavily shaped (basically unusable) during weekdays from 8PM to 6PM.

4. Downloading from News Servers are often more trouble than it's worth if you only have a 384K line.

5. Local data is severely limited for online gaming.

6. Local data is not Capped, so if you overuse, you have to pay R15 for every GB you've exceeded your
limit by.

You can't be serious! R 554 for 50gigs, R19/gig OOB, at 8Mbps all the time, with no "modem taped to the end of a plastic pipe tied to the end of the TV aerial pole with a 10m active USB extension cable appropriately water- and lightning-proofed" type setup. No-one even comes close; neither ADSL nor 3G.

What are you talking about?

What are you talking about?

What do you mean? It's Telkom's do3 package (with axxess for OOB). Go for it, find a better price from anyone, on ADSL or 3G. Not that I'll ever consider 3G. Too much work (the scenario in my post is a true story), for pathetic reliability.

Funny how they put in one ADSL offering, being Telkom, and the rest are mobile broadband providers.
