Make the right broadband choice

I would love to make use of the Vodacom 1GB promotion for R99, but I'll rather be a bonehead and be silly and use the 250mb for R99 I have at the moment. Because I can't friggen bolt the promotion on to my contract!! FU Vodacom you fcking thieves!

With everyone slating telkom, you are forgetting that there are lours of users who download a few hundred GB per month. That's when uncapped(mweb it whatever as ISP) is really worth it...

Ja, very frustrating, I just called VC now to change my 250meg bundle on my phone contract to the 1 gig special and I can only do it on a new separate 24month contract

Credit where it's due...

I do give credit when it's due - and I think your situation is the exception rather than the rule?
Unless I'm just unlucky?

I applied for the 3 month promo and received a call the following day - excellent so far. The employee took my details and said I'd receive an SMS ... which never arrived. Getting towards the end of the month, I needed to know I was at least in the queue and tried to phone with each time being between 30-40 minute wait before I put down.

I then tried to walk into the Fourways Telkom store - and left even more confused. The lady was extremely vague and unfriendly ... continually rolling her eyes with no direct communication as to what was going on. I didn't want to fight and went to Cresta Telkom ...

Two people in the line and I waited 30 minutes without the first person even having gone - and I had to leave. I returned the next day with SIX people in the queue and though '***** it - I'll rather forget about the promo and use 3G'.

A week later I get an SMS saying there are no ports ...

Don’t be a broadband bonehead

Look at the following broadband prices before you sign any broadband contract

What about out of bundle prices?

I was reading on Telkom's website:
"Local" only applies to servers that are hosted in South Africa. Local data is uncapped on all packages and out-of-bundle usage is charged at R15.00 per GB. "

Why is Mweb charging a absolutely ridiculous amount of R200/GB ?

Maybe you should bring this up on the news page, "Out of Bundle dangers" ??

Telkom AllAccess 20GB 20GB + 30GB R239

Wait, what?
They sold 4GB to a family member for that price.

in all fairness, from what I can tell (their website isn't the most informative), the 20+30 is heavily shaped and excluding adsl line rental.

which brings up a good point. if the article is trying to educate people on making the best broadband choice, then all line rental charges should be added into the equation, because R239 and R539 makes a big difference to that decision

It does make a huge difference, you're right. With R539 you can upgrade to 4Mb DoWhatever and pay R639pm iirc, get a 4Mb line and 20GB+30Gb of data....

I've had good experiences with the call center, but I agree their shops are terrible to visit. Everyone's clicking away on their mouses looking busy and leaving the customers standin, and when you finaly get someone to serve you its as if they're doing you a favour.

OMG 370-00 Rand for 20GIG at snail pace and tied to the pole? MTN's snail is not only almost 100 bucks cheaper, but also can be used on the go. Do people actually bother with Telkom's offers?

You can't be serious! R 554 for 50gigs, R19/gig OOB, at 8Mbps all the time, with no "modem taped to the end of a plastic pipe tied to the end of the TV aerial pole with a 10m active USB extension cable appropriately water- and lightning-proofed" type setup. No-one even comes close; neither ADSL nor 3G.

:erm: Sorry, I know we all like to pick on Telkom but that's plain wrong. The TI 20+30 capped offering is one of most stable, least shaped accounts available based on my client mix of ISP's.

The only 3G deal which is not for a new contract/sim is the 8ta 2GB+1GB for R149. The rest are only for new sims/contracts. Not everyone wants to keep swapping sims on their phones or modems to use a bit of data. There too many specials for new customers and nothing for current customers (except for 8ta).

Why is axxess and afri host dsl packages not on here ?

Why promote telkom data Omg .......

Why promote a company that forces people to pay landline monthly charges for a dsl line ? Such a selfish company with absolutely zero support

Very bad experience yesterday with them

It is possible that their website is wrong but let me direct your attention to the following:

click on the products tab
there are two sections SHAPED and UNSHAPED
the all access 16 (now 20) falls under the shaped section

the best unshaped package is 4gb for R489

go to the adsl tab to read the shaped disclaimer.

Personally I wish I could afford to be a bonehead and trust in broadband pricing to a reasonable extent. But from the prices listed in the article and also just general experience it is clear you have to sleep with your eyes open just not to get robbed by these pirates.

I mean my life does not revolve around mobile broadband. I don't want to pay a lot of attention to it. But if you look at how my phone bill fluctuates just due to whichever schedule my Android Apps choose to use to update... It's scary as hell. My phone bill can fluctuate between R430 and R750. I have a broadband package and I don't browse on my phone. Just IM.

I didn't say it was unshaped but was commenting on the way you concluded it was "heavily shaped" from your reading of the disclaimer. I can assure you from experience that is not the case and it compares more than favourably with the "capped, shaped" accounts offered by the other major ISPs.

Have you used Afri, Axxess or web africa ??

Not only use or used them in the past but have clients using them ATM.

I don't force my choice of ISP on my clients, if I can VPN into their systems I'm happy :)
