Strike at Makro — photos

Thousands of Makro, Game, and Builders employees around the country have gone on strike.

The South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) said the strike is linked to three issues.
 
Yeah, thanks to heads-up a previous thread I did all my makro shopping yesterday.

Good luck to all the strikers.

I feel bad for the car guards outside who won’t be making any money thanks to this. They’d love a job inside the store I am sure.
 
I have long stopped shopping there anyway - poor service, also always some or other issue with till points, mostly over priced anyways - and for the few "bargains" I can just order online and not have to deal with Ms SurlyFace at the checkout.

1 CEO = R24 million
Many workers = Low wages. Crazy!

Yea I dont think anyone can argue both morally and logically against such signs. They should definitely get more money.

When you are poor, you fall into an endless cycle that is hard to claw out of.

I have a lot of empathy for retail staff.

I spent 15 years in retail and at one point earned minimal wage for Clicks in 2000 even with 9 years experience. Actually, most of my first decade was below minimal wage (laws don't apply to poor people). It really closes doors on you and moving ahead is not easy.

Its easy to.

Slape is responsible for tens of thousands of peoples livelihoods, and making sure a massive multi-billion rand enterprise keeps going as well as makes profit for its shareholders.
The many workers are there to sell products to an audience that is coming too them for that product.

The level of stress/experience/skill etc is not even in the same universe from a job point of view.
 
As an aside, if Massmarts numbers are right and only around 23% of SACCAWU's members joined the strike, it paints a very poor picture of how strong the union actually is, and also would potentially provide the opportunity for Massmart to question SACCAWUs standing within the organisation over time...

You're correct.

The stress of trying to keep yourself and your family alive on next to nothing is a universe away from a well fed millionaire.

I very specifically referenced from a "job point of view" because of that aspect.

I know that Mitch Slape lives a monumentally charmed life outside of work (though I would hazard a guess his standard work day is nothing like than 12 - 16 hours almost every day) in comparison to the many employees.
