Looks almost like the looters, ie they got the backgrounds & the demographic right, but there's a bit more signs, quite a lot more singing and way less big screen tv's being loaded onto bakkies.

You're correct.

The stress of trying to keep yourself and your family alive on next to nothing is a universe away from a well fed millionaire.

I can understand.

The reasoning though is that if you are in a powerful position, you have to make critical decisions that affect millions of people. You have to be be able to handle immense amounts of stress.

This is why you are rewarded much more than an ordinary worker.

Nobody is forcing them to work there. If they want more money, they should go study, upskill and move ahead.
You know I seriously don't like this line of thinking. Yeah, no one is forcing them to work sure, but these people are still coming into work, they are fulfilling their side of the contract. The sad reality some of Makro's staff are some of the poorest people in our society that will never ever have the chance to upskill themselves. Do you think they can afford to go to university? Many of them don't even have a chance in hell to get approved for any kind of loan in order to afford to upskill. I get so annoyed with these CEOs that take huge paychecks home while their bottom line suffers.

I'm no communist or anything by those means, if a CEO gets a big paycheck that he deserves and the staff of the company are all generally happy, but all means it is his. But when it comes at the expense of the bottom line, that's where it becomes a problem.

It's such a disrespectful line of thinking honestly.

On a totally unrelated note what's our unemployment rate sitting right now ?
I think we're at 8 million jobless people right now ?

The CEO was spamming us with emails yesterday informing us that the stores would still be open, so can anyone confirm if any of the massmart stores are open today?

Where do you think must they get money from? Do you realise what the looting in KZN and Gauteng cost the company? Someone has to pay for it.
Yes.... insurance will pay for it.

R500pm would make a big difference.
Most people who work in retail spend R800 to R1000pm on transport, thats about 20% to 30% of thier salary just on transport.

They still need to eat, clothe themselves, pay rent etc.

But its easy to talk when you have never earned minimum wage.

I'm sure the stress of being imminently close to the poverty line affects your work performance?

I love the people here calling the employees lazy when they have no idea what their work conditions or salaries are. The article doesn't really help give context here either so I can't really blame either side.
