Man jailed for jumping red light

I'm glad they are starting to clamp down on this. Now if only they would do the same for people all those traffic light hawkers, they walk all over the road, forcing people to swerve into, sometimes, over lines.

And yet yesterday someone posted a story about a murderer that was convicted yet got a suspended sentence.

bit harsh imo.

18 months in jail with killers, rapists etc.

Unless South Africa got minimum security prisons like in the USA.

Hopefully this will send out a clear message.

Jumping red robots happen quite too frequently nowadays especially by the taxi industry.
Tragic but necessary that we have to treat a green traffic light as a yield sign in this country.
Now if they would also just punish the idiots who overtake on a solid white line forcing you off the road.

It's not a simple red-light jump, despite what the thread title wants you to believe:
This was after he used a turning lane to overtake a queue of three cars at a busy intersection before jumping the red traffic light.
Two traffic officers stopped him and told him he would be arrested, after which he sped off.
Facts.
Simple little facts, so often glossed over by news-fakers.

And yet yesterday someone posted a story about a murderer that was convicted yet got a suspended sentence.
yes very inconsistent the law is... and has anyone ever spent time in jail for vehicle related culpable homicide? in all of the high profile cases of vehicular manslaughter i don't remember a single person getting jail time.

People bitch and moan about taxis,I see more rich twits and youngsters jumping red lights and stop streets and driving at 160km/h than I see taxis misbehaving...Which is shocking.

I just don't know, 18 months for jumping a light is a bit much, and it's a slippery slope from there, but then again, fines don't seem to be stopping these sort of crimes. Maybe Mila is right, public floggings.

Geez does nobody actually read the article?

Shezi said they were wasting his time and should rather issue him with a fine. He then drove off at speed and they could not catch him.

I think resisting arrest would attribute to the sentence too.

Yeah, recently a taxi driver jumped a red light and killed a 19 year old girl walking her dog in the Fish Hoek area. Driver got off with R1000 bail!!!

All fine and well sentencing a guyfor 18 months to set an example. But the thing is, its sets no example other then showing just how inconsistently the law is applied.

In my opinion, this case is bs, and they judge should have his head checked.

All those people who lost loved ones when robots were skipped, did driver who committed the offence serve any time? Doubtful. Maybe they should.
This guy is just the fall guy for a judge having a crap day.

He did not go to jail for the offense but for not stopping and accepting his punishment.

If he had stopped he would have gone to jail fined and been out.

Let me see them catch fookin taxi's that do this! almost got side swiped on Friday afternoon!
