A school groundkeeper was killed after he was attacked by three pitbulls in Primrose, Germiston, on Saturday, and the owner of the dogs could be charged with murder.

The man, apparently a 45-year-old working as a groundkeeper at Oosterkruin Primary School, was not far from the school when the attack happened on Weert Road.

Police spokesman Sergeant Frank Nkuna said on Sunday it was believed the dogs escaped from a gap near the gate of the owner’s house.

Another officer from Primrose police station said a passer-by who witnessed the attacked tried to intervene but was overpowered by the dogs and was bitten.

Eventually, an off-duty police officer intervened and shot dead one of the dogs.

The two remaining dogs were taken to the Germiston SPCA.

Nkuna said it was not clear if the gap through which the dogs escaped was there long before the incident.

He said an inquest had been opened at Primrose police station.

Nkuna said that if it was found that the dogs’ owner, who was not at home at the time of the incident, was negligent, he or she would be charged with murder.

If it's negligence, then it's not murder. When is the SAPS gonna get this right?

Would love to see them charged with murder, but we all know that will never be proven.

Read it on Beeld just now. Man that must have been very frightening. May the victim's friends and family try and find peace. And that at this time of year. There is a photo of this guy's gate in the Beeld article. I mean how the fark to you keep 2 Pitbulls with a 4 foot fence? Mine can scale a 6 foot wall with ease. That is why we had spikes fitted to the top of the walls and palisades in front...

Just looking at his gates I think he was negligent... But that is my personal opinion.

Overkruin Primary School in Germiston

And, that is right opposite the school. This guy has 3 dogs with the capability to kill a bear and houses them in a yard with 4 foot high walls... This was a recipe for disaster. Could have been a kid or kids. Not that it makes it in any way less gruesome that a man was killed.

I love these dogs, but owners like these gives us all a bad name...

Apologies, was agreeing with you :o Sorry it came across different.

haha, sorry... I wasn't picking on your post. Was ultimately disagreeing with the article (or the SAPS) or whoever said that last line of the article.

Stricter controls should be enforced when attempting to own and care for a breed of dog such as a pitbull... If you own a gun you're required to have a safe for it by law. If you own a pitbull (or similar) you need to have 6 foot high walls, etc, etc.

Just shows how k@k SAPS are in most cases.

Dangerous dogs should be kept behind secure walls and gate. I shudder to think of kids walking past that house on their way to school every day. The other dogs should be put down, far too risky to let the owner have them back.

My neighbour's pitbull used to jump over the 6 foot between our houses into my yard to pick a fight with my Great Dane. He got rid of it when it bit my next door neighbour on the other side in the face.

They can scale a 6foot wall with ease. As said, I had to put spikes on top of the precast walls facing the neighbours. And added palisade in the front so the dogs don't try and jump the fence. I knew these dogs can and will jump the walls, thus I made alterations to ensure they don't jump it no more. Having a 4 foot wall and think it's enough is very naïve and retarded from the owner's side.

And yet people on my FB claim that these dogs are not dangerous, it depends on the owners' attitude towards the dogs or some schit.

It's manslaughter though
