Man killed in horror pitbull attack

It's pitbulls, these dogs shouldn't be allowed to be kept as pets. You don't read in the papers, a 100 times a year, about kids being mauled by Rottweilers or Labradors, or people being killed by them. Sure it happens, but like 1 incident for every 100 pitbull incidents.
Last time I've read of a dog killing someone, was a Boerboel (mastiff), that killed it's owners. Over a year ago. But that's a mastiff, a dog that's also not lekka in the head.

I agree. The fact that these dogs require special treatment to avoid horrible consequences should be a good enough reason not to keep one.

So do away with all dog breeds then?

No more: Doberman, German Sheppard, Boerboel, Bullterrier, Staffie, Rottweiler and a long list of others?

All of these dogs are capable to kill if they are not looked after with love and care.

I am not proposing a solution to a problem. I am saying it is obvious that these dogs require very special treatment, even a staffie is much less prone to attack someone. This alone should make the owner think thrice before getting one. I am not saying to away.

The high number is due to the popularity of the breed. See a post quoted earlier in the thread by ghoti from another thread. All dogs of all breeds have attacked humans before. Nothing less nothing more. I do believe though that Pitbulls do require a special type of owner and should be vetted for such ownership rights. These are very dangerous dogs (no one can dispute that) But most of these attacks happened due to owner's neglect of how the dog was raised.

Popularity???? K@rk, I don't see pitbulls a lot. Most people has normal breeds. Don't know in your area, but here in the Western Cape, pitbulls is scares.
All dogs of all breeds has attacked people, right. But not as much or severe as these. Pitbulls has that stigma for a reason. They were bred for fighting and killing. They don't have a temperament, they have a mental issue.
Let me google a bit: "Poodle kills man"..........only hits I get is of man killing the poodles......next: dogs that kill........"As of May 25, 2013, the USA death count from dogs in 2013 is 14. Of these, 13 people were killed by pit bulls."

A friend of mine had two ginormous Boerbulls. Problem is that he and his family were all of a smaller build. The dogs were kept in check by the odd threat and vocal warning afaik, but I shudder to think what they would have done if the dogs actually went apesh.t on a visitor or got out and wreaked havoc around the neighbourhood.

Biggest thing they should have kept would be border collies, unless the dogs (and owners) were professionally trained.

Where in the Western Cape do you live?? Every 2nd dog that I see is a pitbull (obviously not a good breed like mine :p).

I dare anyone to try enter my house. if you don't have a pair of shoes that has shoelaces on, beware, my walter is going to go for your shoelaces and if you don't have any, then your calves are the next best thing. :D

Any dog big dog is dangerous...

It all boils down to knowing the type of breed you have and how to look after it properly. It is/was/will always be the owners responsibility to know their dog and how to raise it.

Just out of interest, ghoti posted something a while ago indicating that a Chow dog is by far the most vicious dog by far. I'll try find that research/case study.

Found it:

Note the amount of attacks per population of dogs.

In my complex alone there are about 20 houses with pitbulls.

Had a pit and always wondered why no one jumped over my 6 foot wall ,always come home and all was safe .
But there was always the hope to come home and find the pit playing with a burglars body .
Pits are dangerous animals .well the one i had(carver) was a weapon ,i could point it like a weapon if i gave the attack command .
It offed 2 cats and a dog that came in my yard .

Heh. Sounds like you are so proud of the fact that your dogs are capable of tearing anybody limb from limb over something so trivia

Please don't talk such utter ***.

a) We have a ton of pitbulls in the WC. I know of at least 5 in my area and no i'm not on the flats, far from it. I'm in a leafy suburb.

b) Do you understand how ratio's work? A higher number of the breed exists, this stands to reason that there is a higher number of attacks.

c) Take your stereotyping stigma elsewhere.

With pitbulls you can't do anything else, but stereotype. This dog is what it is.
I still can't get myself to believe that pitbulls is a very popular dog, so it's difficult for me to see how your ratios work. Accept if you're putting all kinds of terriers under the Pitbull name. I see a lot of Steffies and American Stafordshire terriers in my neighborhood. Don't think they can be called Pitbulls though.....lot of people confuse the lot.

You get 2 very clear and distinct Pitbulls 3 actually...

1. The normal Pitbull

2. The AMstaff

3. Bully

Boerbulls are just as dangerous. As I said, any large dog. Boerbulls are just as famous for biting kids and killing their owners. So too Bullterriers and so on... If you want a placid dog that won't cause anyone any harm, get a damn Chihuahua :D

friends have a boerbull. We often visit there.
Their boerbull(have other breeds too). Are very protective of the owners and us. The other day while there some how/someone pressed a panic button by accident.
security dude pitches up. I go outside with the boerbull. Security dude has a key for the gate due to it being a big property.
Security dude argues with me coz he knows I am not the owner. the boerbull was instantly between me and the vehicle as the dude tried to get out.
me: you better stay there as this boy will protect me
dude: he wants to eat me
me: that means he is doing his job to protect me
dude turns the bakkie and leaves. At the gate I told him to go I will close, as by then the window was covered in drool, as by then the other 2 equally big dogs were also there.
And I made sure puppies got lots of love and treats.
They are trained to only allow people the owners or us approve of (we look after the dogs if their owners are away).
There are signs on the fence and gates stating that big dogs are there. That the dogs can and do bite. Tresspasing means said persons understands the risks.

While a pitbull is better equiped for killing, imo maltese poodles have a worse temprement. I would rather own a pitbull than those noisy, stink breath a-holes.
the owner of any dog which has shoulders at knee high or bigger need to apply a healthy balance between disciplne and love. In most cases of unprovoked dog attacks it occurs because the owner has failed as a dog owner

note: unprovoked attacks imo exclude uninvited entry into property.

The dogs I mentioned in a previous post will not leave the property unless on a leash. They will stand and bark at the gate, leaving you unless you approach the gate with the intention of emtering.

And another one

http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2014/12...-pit-bull-attack/1151419678988/?spt=sec&or=on

PORTAGE, Ind., Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A 40-year-old man who gave his pit bull a rawhide bone as a Christmas gift was attacked and killed by the dog.
Edward L. Cahill was found dead on the living room floor with bite marks on his arms and face, the Porter County coroner said. Cahill was home alone with his two pit bulls on Christmas morning when he gave Fat Boy a bone. When his wife arrived home later in the afternoon, she found Cahill in a pool of blood and the dog nearby.

Coroner Chuck Harris said investigators know Fat Boy attacked Cahill because the other dog was locked in a bedroom.

"He loved his dogs. That's all I can say, and I think it's something that just went wrong," Cahill's wife Blanca Rodriguez said.

Animal control officers used a Taser on the dog to control Fat Boy and remove it from Cahill's home. The dog was later euthanized.

Yeah but of course ALL pitbulls are destroyers.
