Almost no dog breed is dangerous if socialised and trained properly and from an early age. In most cases it's the owner who needs the training more than the dog, though.

Any dog big dog is dangerous...

It all boils down to knowing the type of breed you have and how to look after it properly. It is/was/will always be the owners responsibility to know their dog and how to raise it.

Just out of interest, ghoti posted something a while ago indicating that a Chow dog is by far the most vicious dog by far. I'll try find that research/case study.

I got bitten by one this year, open gate, over the street and just bit me.
Another person I know also got bitten this year by their own dog, but that one was old and starting to lose it because of age.

It really doesn't stop there, know even more people personally that fell victim to these dogs.
They are pretty dangerous especially with owners of today, and I've also noticed that when they are in a pack with other dogs, the other dog tend to make them over excited towards strangers.

This is the type of dog that only takes one incident to cause a major tragedy.

On another note, pitbull = boerbull?

Sure if named like that owner trained them to be extra aggressive

Boerbulls are just as dangerous. As I said, any large dog. Boerbulls are just as famous for biting kids and killing their owners. So too Bullterriers and so on... If you want a placid dog that won't cause anyone any harm, get a damn Chihuahua :D

I prefer a Dachshund.
I'd get a pet, not an instrument of death for intruders that can turn on me.

Problem is people tend to get these dogs for defense first, pet second.

SPAS will **** it up and the case will be dismissed. owner will go out and buy more dogs and raise them to be dangerous.

hope this guy doesn't have a home invasion while there's no dogs :whistle:

I have never heard of a boerbulls killing their owners, only pitbulls.
 
In our complex its the chows always attacking dogs, my neighbour has two pitbulls, they are the most placid dogs you will ever see. They bark at other dogs but are totally relaxed with people. She however socialized them from new borns and they always interacted with kids and people growing up. They're pretty useless guard dogs now, but still awesome.

ok I've been reading and it comes down to this:

It's how you raise your pet.

Yeah, Pitbull breeders such as myself are always on the defense to protect our dogs but if you raise it among people, in a loving environment, then there is no reason for concern.

I used to have boerbulls and there is still a bite mark in my arm from when I was 10.
All the pitbulls that I had never got serious or angry toward me, the only time I saw one of my pits get angry was when another dog took food out of his mouth, but even then there was no fight, only a growl.

If you raise any dog in a secluded environment, and on a chain then you are asking for problems.

Owners and breeding = bad dogs

A good owner trains and socialises their dog, and buys from a reputable breeder which in S.A. means KUSA registered.

Problem is 90% of the knobs that own these dogs get them because they "want a vicious guard dog", and then buy off some add in a newspaper or gumtree with no knowledge of the pedigree, how inbred the litter is, or how mentally stable the dogs are.
 
I blame backyard breeders and testosterone-driven idiot owners who do not train, socialise and safeguard their dogs. Once again an innocent man and 3 dogs have paid the ultimate price for one person's idiocy :(
Dachunds are apparently top of the list for biting. Only their size makes them "non-dangerous".

It's pitbulls, these dogs shouldn't be allowed to be kept as pets. You don't read in the papers, a 100 times a year, about kids being mauled by Rottweilers or Labradors, or people being killed by them. Sure it happens, but like 1 incident for every 100 pitbull incidents.
Last time I've read of a dog killing someone, was a Boerboel (mastiff), that killed it's owners. Over a year ago. But that's a mastiff, a dog that's also not lekka in the head.

The high number is due to the popularity of the breed. See a post quoted earlier in the thread by ghoti from another thread. All dogs of all breeds have attacked humans before. Nothing less nothing more. I do believe though that Pitbulls do require a special type of owner and should be vetted for such ownership rights. These are very dangerous dogs (no one can dispute that) But most of these attacks happened due to owner's neglect of how the dog was raised.
