Cape Town - Trevor Manuel and Blade Nzimande seem to differ on quite a few things, economic policy in particular, but they do agree on one thing: a BMW.

Manuel's ministry has joined the ranks of the higher education minister, and Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda, and acquired a BMW 750i as his official car.

This luxury car cost the tax payer R1 091 450, slightly less than Nzimande and Nyanda's cars. The vehicle was fitted with accessories - "standard extras" apparently - worth R99 200.

In a written response to a question by DA MP Greg Krumbock, Manuel said his planning ministry is a new one, and thus he hadn't inherited a vehicle.

The vehicle was bought when the service plan of Manuel's previous official car expired, which would have made it too expensive to maintain.

The DA sent questions regarding the purchase of new vehicles for ministers to all government departments.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga spent R1.7m on two vehicles, while Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula spent R1.6m on two vehicles, of which one is a new BMW 7 series worth R832 700.

In the face of what is currently happening with the purchases of vehicles for ministers, he goes and does that

I say he deserves one

Sarcastic or not, I think he does. I am not all that informed about politics etc, but I understand that he has been doing his fair share. Didn't the Rand even take a dip when it was announced that he would not be Minister of Finance anymore? Can't remember.

What about the people that deserves houses and water? I think his car should be last on the list behind other peoples basic rights.
I find this money spending vulgar.

When was the last time you bought an expesive gadget? iPod? TV? Overspent on meat for a braai because it is lekker? You could help people out with basic rights with that money also.

you should ask that to the gravy-addictees, they had 15 years to do something about that and did they ?

He deserves one, not trying to be funny but do you think a guy like him should drive a 100k car?

He is a very important man and doing a fantastic job, give him a damn ferrari!!!!!!!!!. :D

Mila the people who deserve houses and water should be getting that, you cannot blame this bmw for governments lack of funding for houses and water.

That'd be her own money she's spending

Money government wastes, is OUR money.. You are paying thousands of rands of tax a month so the ANC can have those extra little fully stocked fridges in their million rand cars

I'd rather our money went to actually fixing up this country as opposed to luxury hotel/spa visits, and over expensive cars... they dont need to drive around in tazz's either, what about a 5 series instead of a 7 series?

Acctually, I can not remember when. I do not have an iPod. I do not like to braai. And I do not waste money on cars. And If you gave me my tax money i will help those people. But we give it to people that want cars.

killa if this was the first and only bmw then maybe, but its not, how many millions have they spent on bmw's this year? and its not just the cars, its the luxury hotel visits, the spa visits, the R100,000 restaurant bills.. it all adds up, government probably wastes a good few hundred million on entertainment a year

Seems like, just because it's Trevor Manuel, it's ok. Are we trading off principles for people here?

And if people here think that he should get a R1.2m BMW just because of the fine job he did in the finance ministry, then it's just another form of meritocracy, and any "-cracy" just can't be a good thing.

But this morning on the news they said the amounts of money that was spent on cars since JZ became president. Something like R41 million( I'll find the link now) and I think of all the poor people that could have been helped.

And i think the problem is they all think they deserve a nice car.

But Like I always say IMO:D

Jip, and if every person in parliament makes use of his full allowance, it could go up to R240M.

Thank you for highlighting the bigger picture because people just can't see it.
