I don't understand why there is so much media coverage of matric exams, I just don't get it. It's as if it'll be the end of the world for a matric pupil if he/she fails. I guess what I'm asking is why is there so much media coverage/news whenever the "matric season" comes?

Because they're trying to scare kids into studying harder. Its a finely orchestrated conspiracy between the government and the media. The cape argus and times are masters of this type of propaganda as demonstrated by the pass rate 79,8% in the Western Cape.

To get their hopes up so that they think they've crossed the biggest hurdle. The when they hit university, it provides the lecturers with endless amusement :D

If I understand correctly this is the first group of pupils that were part of the new curriculum since grade 1.

The OBE curriculums were only introduced in 2000, so i highly doubt these kids are the first lot escaping its clutches.

So they can sell more papers when some overstressed emo commits suicide because of matric exam pressures

Weird, my Wife's sister is writing matric this year, and she was part of curriculum 2005 (4 years late?) when she started school.

Maybe the curriculum changed a few times since she started, but she was in the first group of grade 1s that got the new curriculum.

Because 33% of learners pass at the end of grade 12. And then they are not able to read or write properly.

How would this scare the kids ? The ones you want to scare cant read the article anyway. If any kid is bright enough to be scared by this, then they have already learnt a lot, because then they understand why education is important. If you dont understand that education is important, well then your future is messed up. Enjoy being a loser :D

thanks :(...

Hmmm, it is a bit irritating being a matric pupil though (I'm writing :P) because it's not me the media is aiming at, I read New24, and what not to stay in touch with the world, I'm my parents that are sucked into the black hole that the media propagates. My parents are more worried then I am!

This is it exactly. i still have never felt so nervous in my life for an exam period like i did for matric exams! The one teacher stressed it to us so much.

Just do the necessary studying and you'll be fine. oh and another really important fact is you need to enjoy the last few weeks with your friends .
95 % of those ppl will never see you in your life again. In the next few years you gonna hear of your old classmates passing away, getting married and having children! so enjoy the last few weeks aswell on a social front

Best days of my life!?!?

Oh man... life is looking bleak now :(.

And with Facebook and all this social networking crap, I'm quite certain I'll be able to track my friends up till 25, after then life catches up with them (and me), and then we grow apart.

When you start working you will long for school/varsity :)

Not necessarily. My sister hated school and she will always hate it. She considered varsity as the best.

Matric is a f$kng joke, I simply cannot believe how many fail each year.

But the knock-on effect is really felt at university, first year students now have to have bridging courses etc. because they simply can't cope or aren't up to the standard required, despite their matric "results". The really big problems are in the maths and science faculties of course.
