We're in the market for a new bed, in Cape Town if that matters. Currently have a Sealy spring mattress which is WAY overdue for replacement. Finding it's a much more complicated decision these days. I'm quite a warm person (physically) so tend to heat up overnight and sleep with only a sheet on top during summer. Don't have aircon in the bedroom so a bit concerned about mattresses that add to my heat problem.

Went to one shop on the weekend to try a few, going to another shop this weekend. I'm used to springs but it seems that foam has become very popular and technologically advanced. Also, lots of people can't be wrong, right? However, I'm not totally convinced on the foam vs pocket spring decision. Spent quite a bit of time lying on various mattresses and found the Cloud Nine Camden quite comfortable and supportive. Not sure though about the temperature control with a solid (vs springy) mattress, even with all the "cooling stuff" they add these days. Hoping to try out some Rest Assured models this weekend which are more traditional yet premium e.g. the Body Balance.

I'm a side sleeper and the wife transitions between side and back so probably need a "medium" style mattress from what I've read. I don't think there is much science in how they determine these adjectives though. Sleeper weight requirements are low (for now) so that isn't really a factor. Budget is decent, not top of the range high but given that we haven't bought a mattress in 17 years, we can afford to splurge a bit. Currently looking in the R12-14k range for a queen size.

Any recommendations based on recent purchases, or thoughts on the type of mattresses we should consider?

@stevenv all I can add is get separate blankets. I would boil away if I have to sleep under my wife's blanket. It's like lying on the sun's surface.

You DO NOT want a Sloom (I have one) or other foam mattress if you are a warm sleeper. Even the Cloud Nines with Blue Gell extracted from the core of the earth I have heard gets hot. Don't get me wrong, Sloom and Cloud Nine is amazing, but it gets hot, specially if you are in a warm environment.

So look at a hybrid or pocket coil mattress.

We've got two of them. I wouldn't buy another make mattress again. It's just amazing.

I have a Tempur-Breeze (I think they’re available in SA). Specifically for hot sleepers.

Yes (in dollars though). Definitely worth it for me.

Bit out of your price bracket but recommend simmons pocket coil.
We have the firm, but you could get the medium.
Can test a few a Dial-a-bed (turnable) or at Tafelberg furniture / beds-direct(non-turn)

Thanks, will check them out. Might be able to push the budget a bit. We're actually going to Beds Direct on the weekend.

Tried a number of beds in shops, eventually landed on 3 choices: 2x hybrid pocket spring and one latex mattress (Magniflex magnicool at vencasa). Turns out the 2 hybrid pocket springs were both Henwood. The magniflex was the goal for a long time but it just didn't feel as good in a different shop (first tried in cape town and now in Durban), it also cost significantly more. So I went with the local shop (Durban area so no help to you) reselling the Henwood.

I would recommend staying away from Bellville Furniture, we shopped for a bed and found one we liked there but it was delivered with a tear, it took ages to get it returned and refunded. I love supporting local and generally smaller shops but that one was a mission.

I love the Padley Pocket Plush Individual Posture 1000.

Can't say it's ever made me feel overly hot. Conforms to your body nicely, but not too much. And a good value local brand mattress too. I'm on my 2nd one since I bought the first one, oh... 10-15 years ago.
