Yes, but they don't have that on the Joburg etoll system, because of the exorbitant prices they paid for the toll gates it was probably not feasible.

It's actually quite a mission through the backroads from William Nicol to Malibongwe :-( than again it's a mission to get on and off the highways between those two points anyway. A week ago I left Sloane street at 4pm, I only got on to the highway a km away at 4:30, it took almost as long to get off again.

And that's because they improved the offramps.

No it doesn't - all that is required, is that Waze users travelling along the route make the necessary changes and mark sections of the road as "toll road" - see the screenshot attached. The way Waze works, is that unless you travel the route you are not able to mark those sections as toll roads. Would be great if someone using Waze could mark those sections as toll (I would love to help, but my route editing is restricted to Fourways/Bryanston and I hardly ever touch the highways).

I find getting on and off the highway to be a major issue, almost not worth it.

If you add the toll fees to this equation then definitely not worth it.

I don't think Waze can work in its present form, they will have to modify the system.
 
Despite the lies told by Alli and that John Robbie is thick, the foreign ownership of the company that is collecting tolls is 84.88%. I suppose you could think that nearly 85% of the profit will be flowing offshore and that isn't too bad. Well, I'm guessing that there are some pretty hefty management fees before we even get there meaning that the amount could be higher depending on how much the 'locals' get screwed. And never mind the gouging that takes place on the capex part.

Have also done this. Bit of a mission but time to take a stand against this government and it's constant tax of us.

I've done the same but if phase 2 of the GFIP goes ahead then I'll be forced to use tolled sections.
This is why collection of fees for phase 1 needs to fail.
If not, soon all the roads country wide will be handed over to SANRAL and tolled, as government and municipalities absolve themselves from any responsibility to build and maintain road infrastructure.
Then government can allocate 100% of the fuel levies to be used for social welfare or other pet projects.

Hardly. Does anyone remember the very first plans for the GFIP? They were supposed to add numerous off ramps to the numerous highway crossings - e.g. Main Rd, Bryanston, Grosvenor Rd, Bryanston, Rabie Rd, Randburg etc. But it never happened. Instead, they chose to do elaborate modifications to the existing on and off ramps to improve flow but in many cases they are no better and do nothing to solve the bottleneck.

No they don't have to modify the system. Waze is a community project and allows users to submit corrections. I corrected street-names, routing (traffic circles in my area) and others and those will go live within a few weeks. The point I am trying to make is that only Waze users who travel on highways frequently will be able to mark sections of highway as toll-roads. Those changes will then go through quite quickly.

Only 2 onramps and 2 off-ramps were added. 1 of each at Garsfontein and 1 of each at Lynnwood. Poor JHB got NOTHING!

And one has to wonder how much of those were paid for by the Stormvoël (and even Zambesi) toll onramps to the N1.
 
It is the community thing that is the problem with Waze - if many people pass the gantries without feedback it overrides the comments from a few users.

Read up how Waze works, it will not work as it is structured as present.

I have done plenty of corrections myself and they work - https://www.waze.com/wiki/Best_map_editing_practice#Toll_roads. If I was a level 3 editor on Waze and a frequent user of those sections, I could mark the stretch as toll-road myself. Would be helpful if you can explain or link why it does not work?
 
Sanral can't say how many e-tags sold

So they don't really know how many have been sold, yet they claim they will be able to monitor every single road user using the roads.

Clowns.

The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) cannot provide the exact number of e-tags sold, it said on Wednesday.

"We have not collated our figures. We should have them by the end of the week," Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona said.

He was responding to Sapa's inquiries about the number of e-tags sold to individuals, to government departments, and to companies.

"However, from anecdotal evidence, the number of people visiting our stores for registration is increasing," he said.

Last week, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced that e-tolling in Gauteng would begin on December 3.

Several organisations, trade unions, and political parties said they were disappointed by the move.

Toll Roads

The Avoid Toll Roads option in the client has been activated in South Africa. Roads and ramps that are part of the SANRAL Tolling system, or a Ferry route where payment is required, should be flagged as such by checking the "Toll Road" checkbox. A complete list of all Toll Plazas, Toll Booths and e-Toll Gantries with their Permalinks is available here.
Important: Segments that form part of the GFIP e-Toll Gantry system should not be flagged as Toll Roads until a final decision has been reached on when e-Tolling will become active. These segments should only be activated when tolling actually commences.
