then you pay for the next upgrade 100 x more expensive. And since you have bought into the scam the first time you are hooked and can not get out of it.

The debt is so vast that it will never be repaid.
 
They haven't dodged anything. It's common knowledge that the etolling will continue to fund freeway maintenance/upgrades. That's what's happened with all the other toll concessions already.
It's just another perpetual tax.

Nah, that boat has sailed. When a billing system lacks basic data-quality and data-scrubbing controls, does not provide sufficient auditing capabilities and when the IT system overall is a patchwork of systems, people, then that ship will hit that proverbial iceberg within months after launch-date. i.e. - everything will look fine for weeks and then it will just go ***BOOM***. Really grinds me to look on how billions of tax-money is wasted and politicians are perfectly okay with this.

Also remember that every opposition party has so far failed to challenge the ruling party. Erecting a few billboards does not fix anything. What did the DA and others do when e-tolling was initially discussed and when tender documents were produced? Surely initiatives like these would have been discussed on an open platform and not just be done in secrecy by the ANC?

Pretty sure there was no open platform... All the gory details were kept VERY secret until right at the end - and even now we don't know the whole of it.

They refuse to address that issue when asked. Which in itself is damning.

I did however run the numbers very quickly (earlier in this and many other threads) and the system makes no sense. Using the numbers that they're bandying about, it would take them about 37 years to repay their 10 year bonds. Or we'd all need to be paying between R1700 and R2600 per month, every month, and within 30 days. Does not compute...

It does compute.
You lower the tariffs and then once everyone has bought into the system and can't boycott it, you jack up the prices to get your money back.

Then, eskomesque 65% pa increases.
 
Beat the rush for E-tags: SANRAL

Gauteng drivers should register for e-tags now to avoid the rush when e-tolling begins, the SA National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) said on Tuesday.

"To avoid a last-minute rush of motorists getting e-tags ahead of toll commencement, we are encouraging motorists to register and obtain their e-tags," spokesman Vusi Mona said in a statement.

Those who had tags fitted to their vehicles would receive built-in discounts of up to 48 percent.

On Monday, Sanral CEO Nazir Ali said 600,000 e-toll tags were in circulation.

Last month, President Jacob Zuma signed into law the Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment Bill, giving Sanral the nod to start e-tolling on Gauteng's freeways.

On Friday, the SABC reported that government intended to publicise the proposed e-toll tariffs this week, with a view to implementing them by the end of November.

The Supreme Court of Appeal reserved judgment last month on a legal challenge to e-tolls by lobby group Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance.

Mona said it was quick and simple to register for an e-tag. Motorists could do so at Sanral outlets and participating Checkers, CNA, Pick 'n Pay, Shoprite, or Spar shops, on www.sanral.co.za, by phone, or fax.

I want to see if these ****s break the law by advertising the discounted rate on the signposts, instead of the maximum rate.
 
haha, there isn't going to be any rush, Nazi Ali! :p

All of the e-tags I have seen hanging on the shelves at participating Checkers, CNA, Pick 'n Pay, Shoprite, or Spar shops are all dusty and neglected. Not a single one has been sold. :D

Hahaha! I want to see the last minute rush for myself.
The statements from SANRAL are sounding more and more desperate by the day.
