Cape Town - President Thabo Mbeki has a point when he says that racism plays a role in white people's attitude to crime, according to at least two experts.

They were commenting on the biting remarks about whites, in the president's latest weekly newsletter, ANC Today.

Mbeki was criticised for reviving the racism question and presenting it as something that was not discussed often enough in South African society.

Some opposition parties were unhappy about the way Mbeki linked crime and racism.

Mbeki wrote that, although he was not denying there was crime, there still were people fanning the fear of crime, based on race.

Dr Charles Villa-Vicencio, head of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, said Mbeki was spot-on when he said white fears of crime were influenced by racism.

Got any factual source for that comment maybe?

And what about this:

Professor Dirk Kotzé of the department of political science at Unisa said he thought Mbeki's comments were taken out of context, because they comprised only a small part of his weekly letter.

I don't even see a quote from that "expert" agreeing with him, saying something is taken out of context doesn't mean you agree with the argument.

And where does the quote in the headline come from exactly, its not even attributed to anyone. All in all not exactly stellar journalism.

Can you imagine if the roles were reversed and Tony Leon had said something like that about blacks, imagine the outcry if a headline was printed saying "Leon 'may be right about blacks'"
 
Perhaps if Mr Mbeki would address the crime issue more visibly the perceptions he 'believes' white people have will go away.
Hard to be diplomatic when you are living under siege conditions in your own home.

The theme of the letter (written by Mbeki in his capacity as African National Congress president and in typical Mbeki style) was that racism still was rife, and a phenomenon that needed to be addressed.

Racism is written into government and company guidelines, employment and procurement policies, also the constitution no less, so yes, racism is rife in todays society.

Mbeki is right that the subject is not discussed enough. It should even be encouraged, but Mbeki must also consider that discussions are only worthwhile if all parties listen.

Maybe the sport of crime would be more competitive if we had a quota system.

Seeing that 98% of crimes commited are by Non-whites. Maybe they should have a quota system that makes space for about 50% of crime must be comitted by a White person. Damn the crimes would be so much better then :D

Substitute "Excessive violence and cruelty portrayed by criminals" for "Racism", and then President Mbeki would have been spot-on.
 
Ok, so if I get this straight, according to Thabo and "the experts". I have a very good chance of being robbed/murdered/hijacked because I am white ergo I still have racist ideals ergo serves me right?
 
Ive been hijacked and in an armed robbery and non of that made me racist. However retarded comments from this caveman do put me on the back foot.

I think what Mbeki was referring to was that White people are believing that only Black people do crime. From a white perspective.

Duh !!!!!

Maybe it should read that 'crime fuels racism'. We had three African guys in our house holding 9mm pistols to our heads...for weeks after that we were suspicious of any African guys walking close to our complex. I believe that this experience resulted in us becoming more racist.

Was it the correct response from us....no....but under the circumstances an understandable one. By our behaviour we were implying that EVERY African male was a criminal, which is certainly not what we believed.

Those of you ready to point out that you are a victim of crime and pointing out that being sick of crime does not make you racist are missing the point.

The point is not that crime does not exist, it is that white South Africans view the crime situation differently. In fact, perhaps its not even whites, I think its suburbanites.

Having grown up in the Cape Flats for the first 19 years of my life, and still having friends who do, I can tell you that for the people living there crime is nothing new. Gunshots ringing out in the middle of the night was a regular occurence.

The reason crime seems more prevelant to those previously sheltered individuals is because there is no longer a whitewash in the press about the state of life in South Africa. We can now get all the gory details and the media will give it because many South Africans still belive our new democracy cannot succeed. Why they want to believe this, I do not know. You will have to search your own mind and heart for that answer.

Another reason crime seems more prevelant is because the formally whites suburbs used to be heavily patrolled. What criminal stood a chance?

I am not saying crime is not a problem, but being negative and constantly complaining is not a solution. Arguing and pointing fingers is not a solution.

And just for the record, I have been robbed nine times. 3 of those times was before 1994.
