Mbeki to stand for third term
30/06/2007 19:03 - (SA)

Johannesburg - ANC President Thabo Mbeki has said he will stand for a third term as head of the organisation if its leadership asks him to, the SABC reported on Saturday.

"If the leadership generally said look, we believe the interests of the ANC and the country would be best served if we have somebody else, that is fine.

"If they said no, you better stay for whatever good reason, that would be fine, couldn't act in a way that disrespected such a view," he told the broadcaster.

Mbeki told the SABC that the decision for him or any other person to stand for the position would be discussed among the leadership of the organisation.

He said this would not be based on personal ambition but on what was best for the ANC and the country.

Zimbabwe here we come...

lion_fish, you do realise that this article is talking about a third term as ANC president, not national president, don't you?

Mbeki's running for a third term as ANC president is a) fine as far as the ANC constitution is concerned and b) far from assured.

This is a symptom of "Our leader won't go syndrome". Tony Blair was a member, as is Bob Mugabe.

The leader of the ANC is traditionally the Presidential candidate. Can't they find him a job as African envoy - or maybe Middle East envoy to Iran/Libya?

He's too old and cranky to stick around. He should go now while he has some dignity instead of 'doing us a favour'.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but i think its more what they dont say than what they do say, as well as what this implies...

Mbeki staying on as the leader of the ANC for a third term and it being "ok", can only lead to it being "ok" for him to stay on as president for a third term.

They are basically conditioning the public to accept the posibility of mbeki staying a third term in the ANC so as to enable the possibity of him remaining president and it not being an outrageous idea if it should happen.

I hope he does go, i think he has far outstayed his welcome and we need new blood to run SA. But you keep forgetting, his "hero" Mugabe stayed in power more than 2 terms... so why cant he?

Title of this article is misleading

Seems like the journalist made a claim of something happening before it was confirmed. It's even funnier how people only see what they want to see.

Also if I recall, Zuma said the same thing. Now if it came down to those two, which do you think is the lesser evil?

You understand it would need a change to the constitution before he could become Pres of SA for a third term. Bit more involved than just being "ok".

I know a part of the constitution can only be changed if the ANC has 2/3 of the seats in the parlement. And other cases even more.

Anyone clued up on this?

The ANC can change the constitution, since they have more than the minimum majority. However, international investors will lose confidence if they ever even attempt this. i.e. Rand will plummet.

A part of it yes, but are you sure they can change all of it (if they wanted).

I don't want to comment, but I'm looking to find the hard facts. :p

You also understand that this is a possibilty and can be done dont you?
Something alot of people would think is "ok" to do...

Yes - I understand that its has already been done a dozen times but I dont think the ANC would show a unified front on this. There are after all others wanting to become president.

There is also precedent for the ANC president not being the president of the country at the same time.

Mbeki rather than Zuma. Dictatorship rather than Zuma, though since people don't vote based on party policy, RSA is a dictatorship.

In some ways Zuma is not as bad as Mbeki. We need to hear him speak. Mbeki is a control freak. They'll have to prise his fingers off the helm.

Mbeki is brain dead. He has done nothing about crime, or telecoms, or the escalating problem in Zimbabwe. Having said that, I would rather have him in power than Zuma. If Zuma makes president in SA - things will get really bad.

One possibility is something similar to what Putin is supposed to be planning, i.e. Mbeki would stay on as ANC president, install a loyal apparatchik as SA president for one term while he pulls the strings from behind and then after that he can run again as SA president, all without touching the constitution.

That's a long time to wait. He'll be even more senile by then :D
Reagan was senile and many would argue he did a better job than those who followed. ;)
