MBP and Solid State Hybrid Drives

I've got one in my main pc as my windows drive.. Has marginal performance increase over a standard drive, barely noticeable. Only my start-up tray seems to appear quicker... other than that nothing. I game and watch movies mostly on my pc. So it's kind of a waste if you ask me. Rather get 2x500GB and raid them

MBP = MacBookPro = laptop. ;)

Otherwise, thanks for the feedback. :)

EDIT - your experience seems to clash with those of the reviewers I've come across. I just found this on Toms Hardware

I think it's due to the application use difference. I don't use small files very often, like I said movies and games, so there is no noticeable improvement as the algorithm is always introduced with different large files. I think if I worked with excel alot or other documents and small files, then there would be. But my usage pattern is obviously wrong for the device :)

Bwana, you gonna get one... i think i must, but if you get it first and let me know how it is... i will be grateful :P... Will try and source it cheaper that 1400 as well.

Rather wait for the Intel X25M at 600GB, or get the 300GB version when that comes out. Or if ya can't wait, get the X25M 160GB.

Yeah that is the ideal solution. Problem is they're only coming out at the end of the year. And right now, an 80gb is R2400 or so, a 160gb is like R4000 at least. This is 500gb for R1400 and still quite a bit faster, so it's a decent interim solution.

Bwana the review on Toms said it had very little to no performance gain over a standard drive. I would rather go solid state or use the drive you have.

Right now capacity is about as important to me as performance and that 160gb wouldnt even hold my working gallery. :o

The price of these SSD is also prohibitive.

Tom's hardware updated their review to include
Update: Our initial review provided all of the low-level and application test results. But because of a very short testing period, we could not include the real-world testing that would allow the Momentus XT to ‘learn’ and provide performance that is more similar to an SSD. We added these results to this article today, so check out the benchmark pages on PCMark Vantage (repeated), Windows Bootup, and Application Launch testing.
Furthermore my current drive is a 5400 so even if the SSD component didnt give me an improvement on its own the 7200rpm drive does.

In the same boat as you for both of these. Going to try order this week, just looking at prices.

Awesome. Where'd you order it from ?
Prophecy, and it should be arriving today according to the courier.

I'm shooting some cricket this afternoon so after the cloning is complete I'll try to remember to run some importing and processing tests on the photos with both drives and see what difference it makes as far as my needs go.

Please let us know the difference in speeds!

Ok cool, rectron seem to have it, just need to check stock. How are you cloning? I am going to need some instructions for this :P I have an external drive that i can setup as a time machine, will it be possible to use time machine to do a full clone ?

After popping the new drive into an external case I used superduper to do the cloning . . .and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. I wish I had a FW800 enclosure lying around.
