Ok I get home day before yesterday and on my desktop is a small window stating that my paypal account has been hacked and i need to log into it so I can do whatever...

I close the 3 windows via task manager and continue as per usaul. Virus scan hasn't picked up anything.

This morning when i got up i went to the pc and i saw that there are 3 new tabs opened and a picture of something that i can't describe but def not something the wife or I would be looking at.

I need to get rid of whatever is on the pc soon as i need to do banking in a few days so any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I'm using avast, windows xp and the standard windows firewall. All the software including the antivirus is up to date.

Thanks,
SS

Herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, which one is it?

Good luck on treating it though :p

Scan for spyware using AdAware or something similar. There is another, better, adware scanner but the name escapes me now.

scan spyware (http://www.scanspyware.net/download.htm) and bit defender are 2 useful tools I use but I'm sure other forumites might suggest other software. Perhaps it would be prudent to use Mozilla firefox rather than internet explorer. Firefox seems less susceptible to virus and spyware...

+1 imo.

Also try Spybot search and destroy.

I use firefox alll the time but still i've got this issue... Sucks... I'll try spybot and check the other adware software and that link...

Thanks.

Suggestion - create a knoppix live cd, boot from it when you do banking.

But yes, I'd suggest using firefox, unless it's standard bank's own software which insists on using braindead IE.

For starters, do you actually HAVE a PayPal account?

Ah... Then I'd assume spyware. The forumites suggested spyware / adware killers; I'd start with that. And The_Librarian's suggestion of using a Live distribution to do your banking is a pretty good one. Knoppix, Ubuntu... All good for doing just that (although it might be overkill if you prefer to use Windows but do fairly frequent banking).

But I WOULD suggest making sure that you rid yourself of whatever is causing these incidents BEFORE doing your banking. I know too many people who just decided the risk wasn't great enough, so went ahead after receiving all the warnings, and lost their $$$ (not a lot, luckily, but still).

Download combofix...its a winner. And AVG, its free and finds all sorts of crap that alot of the big guys dont

TrojanHunter is really good too, u can get a 30 day trial

Have a good look at your start-up. Doesn't sound like a particularly skilled programmer, so chances are that thing is sitting somewhere in the standard start-up places.

definately spyware. download spybot and run a full scan. you might have to do it in safe mode - some of the newer spyware is a bugger to remove.

otherwise run autoruns to see what file is causing the problem and upload it to virustotal. They will tell you what its infected

Thanks for the info guys... Busy running spybot but it seems to be hanging... Will leave it to do it's thing now... need sleep...

LOL... I found "quite a few" infections... All low level to medium but still there nonetheless. Thanks for all the assistance.. Seems to be sorted out now.. Will do banking from work though...:o
