Muslim worshippers at about 200 old mosques in Mecca had been praying in the wrong direction for decades because the mosques were not built correctly, a Saudi newspaper said on Sunday.

The mosques had not been built precisely based on the qibla, the official alignment with the holy Kaaba shrine at the centre of Mecca's Al-Haram mosque, the Saudi Gazette reported.

Muslims around the world are bound to orient their daily prayers towards the ancient Kaaba, and mosques everywhere are built to face the black-shrouded building, or have indicators of its direction.

The discrepancy was only realised after looking at the old mosques, some built more than 50 years ago, from atop the new skyscrapers being constructed in Islam's holiest city in western Saudi Arabia, the report said.

The pan-Arab Al-Hayat paper said Tawfik al-Sudairy, the Islamic Affairs Ministry deputy secretary, had downplayed the problem.

"There are no major errors, but corrections have been made for some old mosques, thanks to modern techniques. In any case, it does not affect the prayers," Sudairy was quoted as saying.

Mecca experts had suggested that the errant mosques install a correct indicator of the qibla, the Saudi Gazette said. - Sapa-AFP

Ooops, not exactly what the faithful would want to hear, is it? :D

LOL LOL yeah i will agree with you there is the thought that counts, it will be very funny if they discover that they have been facing Israel all this time

Actually - it really isn't a big deal. There's a few degree's tolerance with regards to that. I wonder if anyone knew that you can find the direction of the qiblah using the stars. Also- to someone who mentioned israel. Initially the first qibla was musjid-al-aqsa in jerusalem, occupied palestine. It was later moved to makkah when the prophet s.a.w embarked on the hijra.

I once saw a chart somewhere that showed the lines as they went around the world. How does that work?

Makes one thing how islam will stand up to extreme long term space travel. You can be out a few degrees here on earth, but in space, what is it, one or two parsecs ? Not to mention, speed of light versus speed of prayer limitations.

you know funnily enough i've also wondered abt that. It stems from a trip i made to the kennedy space center a long time ago. Since then i've always been fascinated with space travel. Its actually a very logical question. And one i'm sad to say i don't have the answer to. But the way i see it, if u were a muslim space traveller, you'd have to align your spacecraft with the holy city of makkah during their prayer times and face down at it. Thats how i would do it. Obviously you'd have to keep it fixed in that position relative to earth for the duration of the prayers.

Look I'm pretty open with my views because I believe we're all entitled to our opinions, and I don't like Muslims in general, but I do feel sorry for those builders who are most likely gonna get stoned for this :(

thats fair enough. And i accept ur reasoning cos at the end of the day every person is entitled to their opinions. But let me throw a curve ball in here. Like u said- you just don't like it. Why is it that ppl accept the dislike of muslims, Yet if someone were to say "i don't like jews in general, its the same way i don't like tomatoes" we'll hear anti-semitic claims from all sides? By the same token wouldn't wat u just said be islamaphobic? I'm just asking to have a better understand of how ppl's thought processes work.. Not inciting anything so please don't the wrong impression here. Neither am i personally against jewish ppl, some of my friends are jewish.
