You can’t, the non android one players almost never get updated and custom roms are almost non existent.

The data app does not exist as that android version does not support the newest DRM features added by Google, even if you side loses it, it would literally just not work.

If you want things like Netflix and DSTV you need an actual Android TV and not an android media player (what your friend has), which as far as I recall locally available ones are the Telekom Lit Box, the Xiomi Mi boxes, Nvidia shield. Most of the others are media players which these days are pretty useless for any streaming service.

Else a chromecast and run netflix from phone.

aah ok he is trying to return it but they dont want to take it back

If he got it less than 5 days ago he can throw the COA card unless it was on sale or explicitly states somewhere, not hidden away, that returns are not accepted.

Awe ma se kin.. just take a flash drive, download the netfkix apk, and sideload it. Dstv now wont work, because the box isn't google certified.

will one of these roms work

You will need to find one specific to the base device you have, a lot of these boxes are generic rebrands so one may exist named for the exact one you have or it may be for the original own branding.

Finding out the base will require some Google digging, otherwise you can go with brute force and download and try them one at a time until one works or all fail. You will never get it right to install an incompatible one.

If you can't return it, ask to exchange with something usable instead. They will be more open to giving you credit, rather than a refund.

Cut your losses, but at least have something you can use.

(bluetooth headphones, speakers etc)
