Media Player vs Dvd Player

Bulldust. The Samsung HT-120 that Makro sells for R999 can use any external FAT32 HDD's up to 160GB.

Mine plays everything I can throw at it.. Bargain.. :)

did you try anything bigger? How is the play back on movies ect? The speed of the movie loading and actually playing?

strange i never said i tested on your one :)

lol, isie, I understood what you tried saying! ;)

I bought a dvd player with flash that was supposed to support multiple formats only to be disappointed by the playback quality or support.
The bigger the flash drive the slower the read on the dvd player.
The audio is almost always out of sync and luckily i have a netbook with vga out to do the job now.
If i was you and didn't have a netbook, i would get media player.
Or use an old lazy ass celeron p4 as a media server.

When using a P4 as a media server any way I can still get a remote with that? :-P

i did say tested on LG DVD recorder though you got me there, odd it wouldnt pick up my 120GB HDD (also formated with FAT32)

It plays fine with my Verbatim portable drive. It's a little iffy when using my WD drive. It works if I use a short enough USB cable, but if I use the cable that came with the drive it doesn't pick it up.

Still, though, it only plays DivX movies, so MKVs and ISOs are not an option. The Mede8er has been a revelation.

+/- 5 seconds to load a movie. Plays perfectly. Only thing it doesn't like is the HBO "static" logo.

Manual says max 160GB so that's what I bought. Haven't tried larger drives.

Bargain at R999.

You have a point there, but could you upgrade the Mede8er in future, like you can with a HTPC?

Well, my Mvix has lasted me about 4 years so far... and now that it is time to upgrade I am moving to a Mede8er. Total cost is still under R8000 for both the Mvix AND the Mede8er... so I am still ahead on the first purchase of a decent computer.

Lightbulb :) my 120Gb is a WD passport looks like WD is not freindly with DVD players.

I was lucky enough to pick up a demo PS3 from Incredible Connection a couple of weeks ago for R1800 and I must admit, it's an awesome multimedia player especially when using it with the PS3 Media Player application. Much better than my old MVix. I don't have an HD TV and I'm not a gamer, but I still think the PS3 was one of the best electronic purchases I've ever made. That said, I would probably have bought a dedicated multimedia player if I had to pay full price for the PS3.

So all the media/content you want to watch is still on a PC, but you access it via the PS3 wireless?

Gary, are you still on the Mvix or have you gotten a Mede8er?

Ja... you can get cheaper... but in this case I would go for a decent one for my Media Center PC. :p

R2000 sounds like a lot, what is a decent one, if I really want to go for the HTPC?

If you're contemplating spending R2k on a remote, rather spend a similar amount on a decent Antec or Lian Li HTPC chassis with free remote.

I am looking for a blu-ray player, that will read a 2tb external hard drive, and read most video formats (including AVI). Any suggestions? Have thought of going the media player route, but would ideally like to go the 'all-in-one' route if I can with a blu-ray player.

Good HTPC = R9,000.00 (QuadCore, 1 PCIe graphics card, small hard drive)

R9000 for a HTPC? And you mention "small" hard drive? Lolz, what are you smoking?

Good Media Player = R4,000.00 (Mede8er with two Terabyte drive)

Mede8er is a "Good" Media Player? :wtf: You're definitely smoking something.

sure... just add another R2000.00 to the cost :D :p

R2000 for a remote? You gotta be tripping bawlls mate, give me some of that stuff!

Or if you have a media player with XBMC, just use Yatse on your phone and you've got a free remote...

or if you have a pi running xbmc, use your TV remote itself.

Can't recall the OP mentioning his make of TV, but you can only use the remote if the TV supports HDMI CEC (which most modern ones do).

From what I recall when I did the same thing with my Pi and Sammy TV (sold the Pi).

I am sure the original op came right 3 years ago when b this discussion ended :-)

Look into the Samsung Blueray players. They do that , mine also got Wifi and Samsung's "SmartHub" software on it which allows you to install apps (Plex,Youtube,Facebook,Vimeo etc etc) and also streams content from your PC/tablets/laptop and HDs. Simple example, something i do more often than i thought, i browse to a youtube clip on my ipad and when i play it, it actually detects my samsung blueray drive being on the network and i just tell it to play the clip there...and voila it plays on my tv.

I bought mine for like R3k at Makro and it included a full 5-1 surround sound speaker system also.

Something like this : http://www.samsung.com/za/consumer/...ent/3d-blu-ray-home-entertainment/HT-F4550/XA

Sold here: http://www.makro.co.za/p/8488/samsung-51-blu-ray-tall-boy-home-theatre-system/

LG got something similar going that are cheaper, but not sure how good their software etc is. I am running a Plex server on my home PC and stream all my tv series/movies from there to my Samsung using the Plex App installed on the blueray drive. Not so sure LG got the apps/support that Samsung got, but they got DLNA (the standard way to stream stuff, but without all the cool features you see in an app like Plex)
