Maybe a stupid question, but if I'm looking at a media player to connect to my television, won't a DvD player with USB supporter work just as good? Can't I like my 1TB to the DVD Player and use it as a media player?

Most DVD players are also limited to playing back avi's and will not play mkv's or avi's with bigger picture resolutions.
If you are looking for a one box solution I would recommend a Popcorn Hour C-200 as you can add a DVD or Blu-Ray ROM drive to it.

nope dvd players cant 'see' protable HDD's (tested on an LG dvd recoder) even if it formated as fat32, it can see small flash disks though.

Bulldust. The Samsung HT-120 that Makro sells for R999 can use any external FAT32 HDD's up to 160GB.

Mine plays everything I can throw at it.. Bargain.. :)

I bought a dvd player with flash that was supposed to support multiple formats only to be disappointed by the playback quality or support.
The bigger the flash drive the slower the read on the dvd player.
The audio is almost always out of sync and luckily i have a netbook with vga out to do the job now.
If i was you and didn't have a netbook, i would get media player.
Or use an old lazy ass celeron p4 as a media server.

I think yours is the exception right now. Majority of them don't as yet from personal experience.

I would still build my own small media player/htpc.

Good HTPC = R9,000.00 (QuadCore, 1 PCIe graphics card, small hard drive)

Good Media Player = R4,000.00 (Mede8er with two Terabyte drive)

You have a point there, but could you upgrade the Mede8er in future, like you can with a HTPC?

strange i never said i tested on your one :)

You did, however, say quite categorically that "dvd players cant 'see' protable HDD's". I have an LG DVD player that "sees" my 250GB FAT32 format "protable" HDD.

My Mede8er is still better though. There are video format issues with the DVD player, and also file size issues with FAT32.

i did say tested on LG DVD recorder though you got me there, odd it wouldnt pick up my 120GB HDD (also formated with FAT32)
