Media Player

thats all good and well, but alot of people dont have all that time to configure the Raspberry, and mess around with it. I just want something that will play things, without having to tinker with it all the time.

What tinkering .... load RASPBMC, you done... If you want to unlock the magic world of free tv / movies etc then 5 minutes of tinkering to get XBMC hub running.

..... But, just looked at that Android Ez-Box MX3 (sho ... nom nom)

still tinkering though.. :-) btw, agree, the Ez Box Mx3 does look very interesting. they dont have stock yet, but should have in either this week, or next week. so im possibly going to hold back for that

I'll never waste money on any media player ever again ... Raspberry Pi with XBMC ... nuff said.

As a matter of interest. How much does a new Raspberry PI cost these days including power adapter, SD card and enclosure?

the M3 could possibly retail for around R1200, but this is for the one with 1GB ram

AVSupply: Your modified launcher looks very nice! Any idea what skin they are using for XBMC in the second video?

I watched those videos again and see that they are running an app called aiotv which I found in the Play Store. Unfortunately it crashes a lot on YouTube/Vevo content etc. on the DroidTV which is a pity as some of the live streaming content like CNN works quite well.

Thanks Yotch. They are using a customized Aeon Nox skin

I'm busy putting together our own one, which will ship with the M8 and MXIII. I'll also see if it's possible to make the same changes to the MX

Roku + Plex - Content is available to all devices (Tablets, phones, pc's etc). Plex index all files and fetch images files and reviews.

Hi AV. I just dropped and broke my Samsung dongle and was thinking of replacing it with a miracast adapter from you guys. Please could you tell me if it gets plugged into a wall or if it's USB powered.

Can i connect the adapter and my phone, activate VPN on my phone, then stream live from BBC. My phone's connected via wifi to the router.

Sorry for the stoopid questions :-) i actually came to the forum to ask whether the members knew AVsupply.co.za and whether they'd recommend buying from you...... and here you are :-)

Hi maumau

Replied to your PM :)

Thanks for your help Yotch

@maumau: Also take a look at the new MXQ S85 media player from AVSupply that will be available shortly. It does cost a few hundred more but will allow you to run Netflix, Free Hulu, Hulu Plus, YouTube, XBMC (1channel, ProjectFreeTV, Navi-X, Icefilms, IPTV etc. etc.), web browser, gaming and much more without the need for a cell phone.

Thank you Yotch, that player looks amazing. I'll have to do a bit of research on how to use a media player but from what the forum says your new one has everything anyone could wish for.

Got it thanks Yotch, I'll have to phone AVsupply tomorrow to find out more about how a media player works.

I'm guessing the player gets plugged into TV via HDMI cable which carries picture and sound from the box to the TV. One can plug various devices into the box via all the ports, I.e. USB and others mentioned in the video.

Now comes the confusion :-)

Where does VPN come in? Does one activate it on a phone or tablet then access, say BBC on the phone, then stream from the phone to the media player via bluetooth for the player to send it to TV.

Baby steps, apologies for my ignorance.

If I could screen mirror my phone to my TV via this device then it's a definite..

Yup I'm off the chromecast idea now since the Roku 3 allows casting.. Just that these android mini pcs are making a lot of sense

@maumau: Yes, you plug the media player into the TV using either an HDMI cable or via the RCA cables. This is another big advantage - you can connect this media player to both new LCD and old CRT (tube) TVs. You can convert a 20 year old obsolete TV into something that is more powerful than the latest R10000 Smart TV.

I just Googled for a few live BBC streams to demonstrate how easy it is to find content for this box. Both of these websites appeared on the first search page. I had no problem opening several streams from both of these links on my MXIII using the Dolphin browser. Test them out yourself using a PC based web browser.

There are many other ways to watch BBC channels on this media player. You need a good internet connection to get good quality streams. I have loaded an IPTV playlist in XBMC which has more than 300 live TV channels which includes most of the BBC channels. You can use a VPN via one of many apps from the Google Play Store, use a free DNS service like Unotelly or stream directly from the IPTV service without any additional services. It all depends on the service that you are using.

If you want to get an idea about streaming the latest TV shows and movies on this box, browse to www.usdrama.net (600+ of latest TV series etc.) or www.shush.se (Movies, TV shows etc.). Try to stream something via your browser. You can do exactly the same on this android media player. In addition it comes preloaded with apps for Netflix, Free Hulu, Hulu Plus, YouTube and XBMC which has the largest library of on demand video that you can find anywhere. I also use the Spotify and VEVO apps to stream music from the media player while I am working on other things.

If you watch those videos that I posted above carefully there is a Miracast app available although I haven't tried it myself. I have the MXIII (R1200-00) which is several hundred more expensive than the MXQ which has an Antutu 5.1 score of 38000+ - nearly as high as one of the latest Qualcomm or Nvidia based Smart phones. With this kind of performance you don't really need to access your phone. Since a media player is bigger than a Smart phone the manufacturers can use large heatsinks which allows them to increase the clock speed to get much better performance from significantly cheaper processors.

Post again if you want any further information.

I did notice the app appearing on the TV screen in the video when i watched earlier Yotch, perhaps because that was my original interest.

Work will have to take a back seat tomorrow while i digest this. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to explain the details, hopefully your post will benefit others as well as me.
