Media Streaming

reason for Linux.. it's nice to have gaming console as media centre... all in one box...
but i might have to just get another pc... to be a media centre... :)

Thanks for the explaination about BC....

And yeah, I did give Forza2 a bash on the xbox... its good, no doubt about that... but then again GT5 is coming out soon, and if u play forza2 it compares with GT4 which is somewhat 4yrs old....

GT5 i doubt will compete with forza2, as it's in a different league... then again,
it could be a flopp highly unlikely as GT is yet to collapse...

I jus made my decision much harder to picking out my ultimate gaming console... :(

I have little doubt that GT5 will be excellent. I'm quite sure, at least graphically that it will be better than Forza, but I do think less than some would think. If you look on the net there's a huge difference between the external car cam shots and the in car gameplay, but that's not to slight the game.

But you're right about flop, but as in flip flop ;) GT5 will surpass Forza2, then there'll be Forza3 and Gt6 etc etc, such is life.

What I am looking forward to next year though is "Race Driver: GRiD" - same guys that did DiRT, but with performance street cars. As DirT gave Forza a hard time, I'm sure it's going to grief GT5, and it's available on PC, PS3 and 360 ;) Check out the screenies:

ga ga . . .

As I said earlier, if you want to store your content of the actual console then the PS3 may be the device for you, you don't need to but linux on it to get that functionality. I don't know about streaming it from there there, Scotty could probably give yo uthe details.

thanks doobiwan... you guys have been great help... ;)

And yeah... as I said, I just made my decision harder... was going to go out and get myself the 360... but blu-ray is holding me back...

yeah, i hope scotty would be able to enlighten me on linux streaming...
I know setting up the PS3 for streaming is not as easy as 360's 'next, next, finish'
but it's all abt wifi these days...

btw, would bluetooth wifi make a diff over 2.4ghz wifi???

Two very different things. BT is more a cable replacement technology and is not designed to transfer large amounts of data, and you cannot use it to do as such on the PS3 as far as I'm aware. Also as I said, if you're after HD content be careful of using wireless any other machines on your network, or any interference from neighbouring WAN's and a typical "g" configuration can't stream HD. I use a 40Mb Cat5 cable for my 360, I even have to go so far as to pack it in every night so my 10 month old doesn't rip it out the socket, and it's not that big a hassle. If you have the option, even with the PS3 I'd recommend laying cable, through you roof even.

On Blu-Ray, if you want it good for you, but I've avoided the whole HD format thing for two reasons:

1. By my eye's the difference in quality between a well upscaled DVD and true HD source just isn't significant on a 32" screen, for a movie. HD gaming is a different story.

2. I prefer standalone devices - I have a family, we can't all do the same thing at the same time.

X. I'm a firm believer in downloaded content - video on demand etc. I can honestly say I haven't watched any of my 60+ odd DVDs more than once or twice.

Ok... so, after reading through some of the bias (not to bias... but it's present) posts by doobiwan... I'm gonna say that... on paper, those specs MEAN NOTHING!!!

it's the console you would rather live 5 years + with and not get bored...

As of linux streaming... it's like you lan with a bunch of pc's... you just share the media you want... and then linux will pick it up... plain and simple...

Remember that both consoles are equal... one has more games(xbox)... while the other is better at media(ps3)... now, this may sound fanboi like, BUT the ps3 DOES play movies and upscales dvd's better(only slightly... but if it turns you on, there's still a difference)

Bluetooth and wifi DO run over the same frequency, however, they to very very very different technologies... wifi is many times more stable... and requires a more complex and more precise encryption while bluetoth has been around for ages... and is very, ah... simple and "slow" so it's only good for phones(the cheap cost) and wireless cables.

if you want it for blu-ray... um, ya... rather upscale dvd's fr now... and once you jump into the water, there's no ladders to pull you out unless blu-ray wins... so rather play it safe...

But with regards to that... because blu-ray is the standard for ps3 games, that means the games have 50gb's of data to fill up, so there's no worries with regards to the stories being cut short like with the psp

As for GT5 and Forza... there's NO competition with regards to the two games... GT5 is the short of game you worship and then play, while forza is just play and have fun :P

I was told that each car in GT5 took 6 months to model... which is um... wow.

the ps3 was playing catch up, but it's seemed to have leaved off with the xbox... which simply means... I won't stand for over bias comments on both sides of the consoles...

the xbox is an amazing console... and so is the ps3... now which one is best? well thats up to you... as I can't tell what you grow up with or how you will use them or what games you play... But i can tell you that what ever choice you make, will be one of the best you have as there's years or happiness in each console :D

1 more thing to say... and thats, you gotta trust your feelings.... if you get the impulse to buy a console then, go for it...
I was struggling to chose which console i was gonna buy... so with out thinking i went with a feeling, an impulse and my debit card, and next thing i know game was asking for my id number to confirm my buy :D and I walked out of cresta knowing what i did wasn't rational BUT it was the smartest choice i've ever made... as now I'm really happy i bought me a ps3 :D

so it might be the same for you but you might end up with a different console... and i don't care which console you go for, as long as I've helped you choose which console is the best and which console will make you happiest, I've done a great job... and I'm happy :D

Oooo . .. beware high expectations for games. Remember Lair? Genji? Gundam? Heavenly Sword? Folksoul? (Some are not bad games, but never lived up to the hype) I don't mean to bash, but the one thing playstation exclusives have done this year is over promise and under deliver, so beware what you wish for in GT5. Yes the cars look absolutely gorgeous, the environs not so much, but more importantly, but how do they drive? We'll have to wait and see. But again don't misinterpret me, GT5 will in all likelihood be a great game, sell bucket loads and probably drive a lot of PS3 sales.

The one thing we haven't mentioned that's worth a consideration is actually pretty important. A comment Scotty made elsewhere just jogged my awareness. Make sure you spend some QT with the controllers for either. It's a pretty subjective thing, but you're going to be holding it for hours on ends, which ever one you chose has to be comfortable for extended use.

EDIT: You may want to have a look at the release lists for the two consoles:

Scotty... thanks for those comments.. and at the end u are correct, it's gonna be my console, so I should know my right decision.. ;)

Doobiwan... yeah you right in that we dont really know what GT5 would look like... and as mentioned PS3 have spoken big about other games and not delivered... I however think GT5 would be a great game, even if it's same standards as GT4, just with updated cars...

Ok guys, I think i'm on my final steps to choosing my suitable console...
Just need to get some QT with the Xbox, I have the PS2 and gameplay is same as PS3...

I think im gonna be a little more patient on my purchase... and look into which is gonna suit my needs... and then buy accordingly...

as stated earlier... there's no point in buying sumthing that looks good in paper, and you dont enjoy it for your own use...

I I I... I think I'm changing...

I'd say your's a and doobiman's comments are very tackfully said and compliments both consoles, while still trying to put your own higher... :D

Excellent feedback guys, i'm beginning to enjoy this forum... :D:D

lol... well it is the biggest forum in South Africa...
But it's only my pleasure to help you hey... I mean, I kinda wish people had the same knowledge about the consoles back when i was buying mine.

and as they say... give and you shall receive :D

very true scotty... :)

btw, is the PS3 able to interact with a wireless keyboard? this for internet useage from the console...

jus been browsing kalahari.net...

funny thing.. was looking at the PS3 and reading specs, then 1 of the flash advertisements changed to show the 360 elite... :)

1 thing that is pushing me more towards the PS3, is BR... since even the elite does not have HD DVD, it's an extra cost... and no wifi becomes yet another extra cost...

*hint hint... becoming a PS3 fan already... :D :D :D

Pity you missed the fireworks earlier ;)

So it boils down to:
BR+WiFi+GT5 vs Catalogue+Online+Media

Keep in mind that if you feel like being patient there should be a 360 price reduction early next years, otherwise go with whatever makes you happy, it's your money not ours :) But no whinging 6 months from now ;)

On the keyboard - you can happily hook a usb keyboard up to the 360, but you also get a thing called the chatpad as part of the MSN Messenger kit, it's basically a full qwerty keyboard that clips onto the base of the 360 controller. It's pretty cool, I got one for myself. ;)

LOL @ Doobiwan
shouldn't media be on the ps3 side :p

Nope, sorry. ;)

Media centre extender functionality is superior on the 360, and it supports IPTV (PVR + video on demand etc) which should be here in the new year thanks to Telkom.

The only media 'thing' that the PS3 does that the 360 doesn't is that you can copy movies from removable media onto the PS3 HDD, which frankly is a non issue at only 40-80Gb. I rather keep them on cheap storage like a PC, removable HDD or flash drive and just read those with the 360 via network or USB.

The 360 does store music for custom in game soundtracks, something the PS3 still doesn't do I believe.

So wah. ;)

BUT as it stands now, Isn't the ps3 better? It supports BR and since both media stream... there's nothing holding it back... But you forget, that the ps3 plays media slightly better...and as it stands, the ps3 is one of the best BR players on the market... and since all ps3's come with a hard drive that adds a little to the package...

oh doob, you forget that the ps3 has playtv... which allows you to simply record tv onto you ps3, and then even stream is to your psp... it records the tv signal @ 1080p :D and best of all... We can get it in early 2008 :D... so people might not want to jump on the telkom band wagon and might just stay with dstv... lol they can get hd :P

do a lil research... most sights say the ps3 is better, and since both support divx, i aint going there... BUT the ps3 is and always was quieter then the xbox360... plz don't bash the ps3...

I was reading some comments on a blog. And i'm ashamed to say i used to be like that... some fanboys defy logic and even facts. I might be bias, but I do say the truth...

Doob... media is what sony focused teh ps3 for... but ultimately both consoles are very similar...

PS: don't run into a room weaving and shouting, shoot bullets every where... coz the sad thing is that where could be more people waiting for you in that room, just waiting to own your ass :p

Damn... u jus know how to score points there... :)

yeah, i decided though... am gonna wait on the console... busy trying to get myself a media centre... and then will look into a console to interact with it... from what i'm seeing...

both consoles and taking quiet big drops in prices... so will see in the new year... jus suks... cos I desp wanna play prostreet.. but dont wanna buy it for the PS2, hence wanting a newer console...

decisions decisions...
