Yeah, PS3 definitely lack some features ....

Actually just wanted to check whether you maybe know about a firmware update on the TViX that added DLNA ...

I haven't looked :/

But I am actually interested and will check (though - pretty sure you've done this as well) ;)

I'm running 1.5.9 or something which, as far as I know, is the latest (unofficial) and no DLNA.

OK, haven't checked it out yet, but this si probably gonna be the way to go ....

Surely the TViX is better?!

The look, the feel, the UI, more codecs?

I don't know, the PS3 feels much more intuitive. Took me 5 minutes to set up streaming - and worked perfectly. I am yet to try all the formats, but apparently the PS3 Media Server software can handle everything. The internet capability is also very neat.

I used to manually copy files to the Tvix, wireless copying was always flaky and I couldn't get streaming to work.

The UI is much faster. All in all it feels fresher, but maybe that's because it is new. :-)

Having said that, the Tvix served me well and played pretty much everything I through at it.

So is there a media player with radio, or something you embed or insert to have access to provincial radio?

With PS3 Media Server software you can apparently link to a url and stream radio. Then again you can probably just browse to a url through the console itself. Haven't tried it yet though.

I'm using my xbox - plays most things.
Have the xbox remote which is pretty nifty, controls my tv as well.

If it doesn't play on the xbox, then I connect my laptop to the tv via hdmi.

Make : TViX 6500
Capacity : 1 sata slot (2TB) with two USBs
Chipset : Sigma Design SMP8635 chipset
Firmware : no more official, as unit is discontinued (really? I can't see any info on http://www.tvix.co.kr/ENG/products/HDM6500.aspx)
Price : R1,700 (bought 2nd hand)

Lovely little unit, provides 90% of my requirements for playing movies & series

UPnP is the same as DLNA?

I've never used that feature, but have noticed a UPnP option on it for ages ;)

These Tvix players looks very nice (http://www.tvixbox.co.za/), nice and sleek design, I just think they are overpriced, they use the exact old Realtek chipset that Xtreamer and mede8er are using for dubbel the price, having a look at the link Dobly sent yesterday the Popcorn hour is the best choice
Strangely enough the AC Ryan Essential (the R700 cheapy) has a better chipset than the Xtreamer, Mede8ter and the high-end AC Ryans, even the Tvix

Nope browsing to the URL to stream music doesn't work :-( been trying for ages on my PS3 and PSP, you'd have to use Media Server

The TVix uses the Sigma chip - and the reason it cost so much then, is that there was hardly anything else that came close. I bought it 2 years back when a 1TB WD HDD also set me back R1,500.00 dealer price ;)

There was no mede8tor or C-200 back then.

Yeah, it uses a Sigma chip, but it’s an old one, 300Mhz, i think that’s why i can’t play Mkv

The thing i find mind boggeling is that its price has not come down since 2 years back , But i have to give it to Tvix, its really nice looking, if all Media players had its sleek design and unit display i would have been a lot happier searching for the perfect media player :p

No - it can play MKV ... :)
Also the article says it doesn't have gigabit, but it does.

I've tried just about everything ... mkv, iso, flac, mp3, m2ts etc etc - they all work. The only one that didn't, is a video I recorded from my Canon camera :/ I'm not sure what it is or whether others can either ...

What about that USB like FM/AM tuner? Would be nice to have local radio.

The 6500 and 7000 used Sigma, exact same chip as the PCH ...

With the new 6600 they went RealTek

On the PS3, don't think it would work either as you'd probably have to install some form of drivers etc :-( @ Khanya

Make: AC Ryan
Capacity : 1TB (USB ports are also provided for external hard drives)
Chipset : Realtek 1073DD 400Mhz (according to http://www.iboum.com/pr/playon.php)
Jukebox: unfortunately not. Playing music is a schlep on this device : I store my music in folders like this - <Letter> \ <Artist> \ <Album> \ Tracks. I can only play folders at the <Album> level, not the <Artist> level
Cost: About R1,800

Used to have a MVIX, what a piece of *****. Gave the thing away.
I'm now using the PS3, and in the process of building a HTPC :D
