Pretoria - The Medical University of SA (Medunsa) was under siege for five hours on Thursday, when striking medical students went on the rampage, breaking security gates and smashing glass doors.

The demonstrators ordered a lockdown of entrances and exits as they protested against alleged irregularities at the institution.

In the ensuing chaos, the public and staff, – including lecturers, general workers and administration staff – could not leave or enter the varsity. The crowd overturned a Medunsa vehicle and lit a fire next to it, blockading the exit lane of the main gate and causing immense frustration and long queues, as staff – some with small children in their cars – tried to leave.

the future of our medical industry
One thing i learned is that the media can toy with your mind if you arent careful. Check the comments in that article from the people who have been or are still in medunsa.

read the comments.
Shame man. Must be hard to dislike yourself that much.

Bollocks! They are animals, plain and simple. The media isn't skewing anything? Are the pictures photo shopped?

no its the picture of an old useless car and no staff member s hair was pulled like the media suggest. There is a reason why up to so far the police didnt go to medunsa. They usually hold one of the most peaceful protests in the world. Just ask yourself why the police arent involved then you will get your answer.

So you are denying that a car was overturned, and that the students used violence in their protest?

the car was overturned yes but the staff was peacefully asked to leave.

So the car was turned over and set alight peacefully, really?

Why where the staff asked to leave, surely a protest shouldn't effect those students that aren't involved or do not wish to protest?

As ive already said here that i am a graduate of medunsa. I know the people they are complaining about. They failed 1 student paediatrics level 5 for more than 6 years. A subject that is done in 5 weeks. now do you think the student was that stupid or victimized? If students dont complain about such things then what is the point of having SRC in the first place?

Stop leaving in dream world. when has that ever happened? when there is a mass protest, its is MASS protest

Don't they have independent examiners? Seriously, protest all you want but as soon as it gets violent they lose any right to claim the moral high ground.

Funny enough the student i am talking about passed when his scripts where marked in Wits. and exernal examiners examine final years(orals) not 5th years. they only oversee the standard of the question paper in 5th year.

From the IOL website with one of their demads

* The immediate promotion of affected students to sixth-year with full credit when academic programme resumes

Wish I could have gotten away with that when I failed a course...
