Medunsa protests

Good move by the university if you ask me..

You demand, we show you the consequences of your actions, no more education until you learn to behave like an adult.

As ive already said here that i am a graduate of medunsa. I know the people they are complaining about. They failed 1 student paediatrics level 5 for more than 6 years. A subject that is done in 5 weeks. now do you think the student was that stupid or victimized? If students dont complain about such things then what is the point of having SRC in the first place?

Stop leaving in dream world. when has that ever happened? when there is a mass protest, its is MASS protest

Learn basic english. I said the staff was asked to leave peacefully so whatever news24 and aol are saying is nonsense

Take note of the bolded parts. The reason they failed...I say stupid.

BTW, their actions during the protest, including their demands, simply reinforces the opinion, of them being stupid.

Ag hene, we all know violent protest is the almost the only way to get a SA governmental institution (Medunsa gets a lot of their funding from government) to pay serious attention. All those civilised actions on e-tolls have brought us where? Bet you if a few gantries had been burned down or stripped bare in mass protests things would already been happening to cancel it..

SAMA CALLS FOR END TO MEDUNSA STRIKE

The SA Medical Association (Sama) on Thursday called for an end to the ongoing strike at Medunsa in Limpopo.

"Sama calls upon all stakeholders involved in the Medunsa impasse to work together towards an immediate long-lasting solution to the current strike," Sama president Phophi Ramathuba said in a statement.

"We call upon government to guide, management to manage, and the student community to commit towards a just and visionary course for their own future and the future of this rainbow nation."

The university was closed on Wednesday with management ordering students to vacate the premises. Students had been on strike for about two weeks demanding the removal of certain lecturers alleged to be failing students.

The students were also believed to be unhappy about the renaming of the campus to Sefako Makgatho.

Management said the decision to close the campus was informed by the stubborn behaviour of both the Students Representative Council (SRC) and the student community.

The university management would take full responsibility for SRC affairs.

Ramathuba said the country prided itself at being a miracle nation, where negotiations remained the best and only way to resolve conflicts.

She called on all stakeholders to put aside their differences and desist from milking the situation to settle personal scores and grudges.

"All involved have to understand that what was at stake here is beyond their individual and group interest, this is a matter of national importance. The shortage of health professionals is a national problem that adversely affects delivery of health services," she said.

The current situation was not a winner takes all contest but conceded that the university itself should be the ultimate winner with both management and students continuing their respectable duties.

"The management should provide visionary leadership, academics should research and teach, and students should study and contribute towards building a winning nation," said Ramathuba.

I want whatever Ramathuba has been smoking...

negotiation being the best and only way to resolve conflict?.. It hasn't been like that in this country for a good few years.

MEDUNSA RE-OPENS CAMPUS, ENDING STRIKE

Students at Medunsa would return to campus and resume classes next week.

University management and student representatives reached an agreement on Thursday, to open the Ga-Rankuwa campus, north of Pretoria, for students, university spokesman Kgalema Mohuba said.

"We expect that everything will return to normal by Monday... Police are still investigating the incidents and going through the CCTV footage," Mohuba said.

Both parties apparently reached an agreement late on Thursday afternoon before appearing in court.

Mohuba said a settlement was reached when the SRC agreed to certain conditions.

"The president of the SRC agreed to write and distribute a communiqué indicating that students would cease protests, stop vandalising the school's property and stop harassing our staff members."

Earlier in the day, the SA Medical Association called for an end to the ongoing strike.

The university was closed on Wednesday with management ordering students to vacate the premises. Students had been on strike for about two weeks demanding the removal of certain lecturers alleged to be failing students.

The students were also believed to be unhappy about renaming the campus Sefako Makgatho.

Ahhh so it seems the SRC and students don't REALLY want to stop getting an education... at least some sanity prevailed on their part.

MEDUNSA STUDENTS IN COURT

Five Medunsa students appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Monday, following a strike at the university, Gauteng police said.

The five were arrested on Saturday and charged with malicious damage to property, Captain Rheineth Motlana said.

"They were granted free bail and will appear in court again on the 23rd of September."

She could not provide further details on the students.

The university's student representative council (SRC) could not immediately be reached for comment.

Students at the Medical University of SA (Medunsa) in Ga-Rankuwa embarked on a two-week strike at the university at the end of July, demanding the removal of certain lecturers alleged to be failing students.

A car and the university's main gate were reportedly set alight during the strike.

The university ordered the students to vacate the premises on August 6. A day later university management and student representatives reached an agreement to re-open the campus.

"The president of the SRC agreed to write and distribute a communiqué indicating that students would cease protests, stop vandalising the school's property and stop harassing our staff members," university spokesman Kgalema Mohuba said at the time.

Frigging students should be studying and educating themselves, and not raisin hell!

Just an update on those who tend to be quick to judge things they dont understand

Turns out the students complains where legit. The students who failed got a remarking at UCT and passed and are now doing final year and will probably finish around august next year. The professors who were responsible for this things are suspended and there are investigations going on.
As i have mentioned many times here, don't believe anything from that tabloid called news24. Its main target market is the racist people who comment on it.
As it stands students are back to class doing their best to cover for the lost time including attending on Saturdays.

/* reminds himself to check qualifications of any doctors before allowing any cutting to take place

... Medunsa ... Nope ... UCT ... Nope ... aah ... you at the back there with a WITS degree GTF over here

Sorry to break it to you but wits did the same thing for medunsa in a similar case last year. By the way some departments in tuks med school lost accreditation and will not be taking registrars next year. Where is your God now:D

The fact that they passed is irrelevant.. The fact that they destroyed private property is enough for me not to deal with someone who has graduated from medunsa. ..

Seriously dude. Do you really believe these are students who actually deserved to pass? They are borderline, weaklings at best who should have been culled from the herd.... and all they have learned is that they should carry on like spoiled children when they haven't done the hard work and they will get their way.
You're welcome to make use of their services if they actually graduate one day. Personally I'm going to stick with the guys who worked hard, got the grades, had a some respect for other peoples' property and time

Please stop there because you got no idea. Ive been saying that the students s complaints were legit because I know, ive been there though i didnt fail the said subjects. The fact that you are here defending a professor who is accussed of intentionally failing students says a lot about you. The remarking proved the students were failed. What more do you want from them?
Can you please tell me your reason for defending these professors? Lets see how much reasoning you have got before we decide to use your services wherever you are working.
