Melon Mobile Launching Soon?

No VoWIFI and international roaming is a deal breaker. It's the same problem that all the MTN-based MVNOs have. I don't understand how they can release such a crippled product.

I'm with Melon Mobile and I experienced, what they call, "intermittent outages affecting calls and data" on 20 August as well as today. It is pretty annoying and uncalled for. I do not have access to WiFi during working hours and the connection to the network is completely lost. Anyone else had this issue?

Im considering porting an out-of-contract number from Vodacom to Melon to reduce monthly costs, from +-R350/pm to ~R75.

What's the experience with Melon like right now? Network coverage, issues, support, etc., and advice: Move to Melon or stick with VC (change to reduced cost contract)?

Still no WIFI calling or international roaming. If you value those things then it's a problem.

They have some great deals, and so far after reading through threads here I cannot find any reason not to port.

No zero rated data? Not a problem. The whole principle gripe people have with the definition of unlimited/uncapped...not a problem.

MTN probably has beter reception than Telkom Mobile (I think?).

Porting process sounds fairly easy, but I'm always weary of things going wrong and losing my number. I don't know what the chances of that are.

I'll do some more reading, I am seriously tempted.

I use a Melon e-sim as my primary data card while out and about, coverage seems better lately compared to 2/3 months ago, full 5G coverage in most areas. Previously there were spots where I would completely lose data coverage in certain areas, but not anymore.
Support is quite decent, as they managed to assist me in doing an e-sim swap - something which isn't done often as far as I know - to ensure I kept the same (secondary) phone number and carry over the data from my old phone to new.

I am in the process of porting from Telkom Mobile to Melon now. They have assisted with the cancellation of the Telkom contract, and I am now waiting for my new Melon SIM.

Once I activate that, I can port my number. Support has been great, I hope it remains that way.

I will comment on service quality once I am live.

This is my experience.

I ported from Vodacom to MTN via Melon in June 2024. During the past 12 months I’ve had issues with the Melon app on two occasions, but that was quickly sorted out by the support staff. I can recall that there was an outage once, but I don’t know if this was an issue with Melon or was it a MTN issue. This outage lasted a few hours and I got a bit worried and decided to order an Afrihost AirMobile sim to keep as a backup just in case it happens again. I added the second sim to the phone and during the course of the few weeks which followed, I tested the reception at 5 different places in and around Pretoria. The signal strength was always the same, but I was shocked to see that on every occasion and at each of the 5 locations I could not even get half the speed with the AirMobile sim which the Melon sim gave me. So, the AirMobile sim is gathering dust in the cupboard.

Me personally I wouldn't want my primary sim with these small player Mvno's, especially not if it’s an important number that you've had for an eternity that would be very painful to lose, their support can be very patchy and when things go horribly wrong there's no walk in stores and contacting anyone that can actually look into things and escalate can be very difficult. For a secondary sim or data sim, they are great or if you don't mind losing your primary number.
