Well I hear GTIs are a high hijack risk and as a result the insurance cost is high. Were you super-alert when you were on your GTI or you behaved like the average motorist in terms of where you go and what time?
 
Well depends on what is in your collection. If you have a few Auto Union DKWs then I reckon your VAG collection is off to a good start. Ever driven a 2-stroke car?

Insurance costs are high because it's under the "sports car" section for most insurance companies. If you are under 25 or never had insurance before it will be ridiculously over-priced.

There you have it. The perceived value you save in trade in value you pay extra in cost, extras and insurance.

LMFAO ahhh the condescending "Do your research" spew! You do know Renault have ownership in Daimler right (through Renault-Nissan)? Nearly all auto makers, especially in these setups, have engines (and parts) from these sub companies. As it stands, a Mercedes will have Renault AND Nissan components, including shared engines or engine components, and Renaults, and Nissans, are getting Mercedes more powerful engines.

VW had a similar partnership with Suzuki a few years ago, especially to benefit these small engines they are currently rolling out as standard.

BMW has partnered with Toyota to build certain models and share technology and components.

If you want to get technical to this point, to prove Mercedes are NOT a premium brand (Premium Marketing quote), you do know most of the components even in your beloved VW are made by a brand that would never be considered upmarket, and you could find even in a lower tier Toyota? "Lower end" OEM brands, be it shocks from ZF Sachs or Monroe (who supply "entry level" BMW, Audi & Mercedes), bulbs and plugs from Bosch etc etc. They slap a different logo on them and call it "proudly made by [insert your car maker here]".

Audi has practically the same components shared across the VAG group of companies, be it Volksie, Skoda, SEAT etc. Does it mean the "premium marketed" Audi is really not premium or has the quality? Even VW is now an overpriced vehicle, with most not even sold with any sort of Maintenance or Service Plan as standard, while their "unreliable" competitors like Peugeot do.

Mercedes-Benz has quality & reliability issues, so does Toyota, Mitsubishi, GM subsidiary vehicles, BMW... Need I go on? Auto makers have been having these for quite a few years now due to cost cutting and increasing production, that's why we tend to have HUGE recalls every few years across these brands, be it a messed up starter, or catastrophic brakes. So how about you do YOUR research next time you say they were CAUGHT out.

It was a publicly announced partnership with Mercedes saying their smaller engines will be manufactured by Renault . They just launched the C160 in EU, guess what engine that could be? SUPRISE!


The heritage, design, build quality & after sales service alone on a Mercedes, is certainly no "premium marketing".

Yep. Look, I don't hate VW or Audi; I came very close to buying the S3 or Golf R. The BMW m235i just ticked the boxes for what I was looking for. But having said that, I will rev the folks who have no idea about purchasing cars in real life. Or selling them.

Then you are obviously approaching the wrong insurance companies. It is more about age, and claims history, than anything else. I am paying R700pm or so to insure my R642000 M235i.

I'm going to guess household insurance has been taken out with the same company?

The ones you mentioned play a factor too but like I said there are vehicles which are counted as sports cars or high specs that people pay up the ass for.

Of course household insurance as well. It's cheap; and cheaper when you bring car insurance into it.

That applies to all sports cars but surely you pay an additional "high hijack and theft risk" premium on a GTI?

Know that "myth" about Polo's. Haven't heard any of my friends mention the additional risk of high-jacking etc.
If your car is insured why are you going to worry about such :confused: If the guys want/need a specific car it will be stolen.

Buy what you want and enjoy it mate.
 
I know any can be stolen/hijacked but aren't there models that are more wanted than others? Why one might worry about that even when insured is that you might get murdered or seriously hurt during a hijack despite being insured.

Insurance is there if the car gets stolen, it doesn't help when you get shot/stabbed/assaulted during a high-jacking.
