Merc Or BMW

There is a reason the guys got rid of those cars, they are wonderful to drive, when they go, but when they stop going you are stuck between a rock and somewhere worse, the parts are horridly expensive and it takes someone special to be able to work on them properly.
Buy something smaller and cheaper and later on (when you can properly afford it) buy what your heart desires.

My 2c worth anyways.

why only a merc or BMW.Could you try not be more creative ?

I went secondhand BMW and I'm very happy with my F30 3 Series. You won't find one for R100K though ... my car's retail value is around R200K currently with 98k on the clock.

You go older than that and you'll be getting the naturally aspirated E90 3 Series, which everybody seems to agree is a dog (I was warned off considering one when I was looking).

The new G20 is launching now for about R600K, so don't worry about that :D

I'll echo what everybody else says: do NOT get a BMW as your first car. Not unless you can afford its maintenance (around R5K/service and R3K/tyre).

hold on .. 5k and 3k per tyre , and thats expensive  Cheap as chips compared to a subaru

Just coz Subaru is going in without lube with you, doesn't mean I can ignore the BMW MD's ding dong up my rear driveway more often than I'd like :P

I recently read that you can get a whole set of tyres for a Polo for R4 500, and I cried a little.

Front tyres for my AMG were R1600 each (Conti SC5)

Zactly! It seems to be only BMW who decided to go the runflat route, and while I enjoy the security it provides one pays through the nose for that security.

Yah.

I don't even have a spare tyre though... just a compressor and a can of goop.

i can try to up the budget to R150K but aleast 110K max on the clock..

I think you should up your mileage to 200k if you want to live in reality.

Or just get a normalish first car instead of a German Premium marque.

You can’t have luxury and low mileage and low price. You need to choose two.

Put 100k as deposit on a 300k Merc/BMW to get something proper. But why not just get something like a Fiesta or Polo as your first car? If you put 100k on a 2018 Fiesta, you will only have to finance about 100k, and you will basically drive a new car with Warranty and a Service plan.

If I think about all the dumb stuff I did to my first car ('86 Nissan Langley) I'm glad it wasn't worth anything. I actually sold it for the same amount I bought it for.

I wrote off my next car ('94 Uno Fire) though. Broke both my feet when I rode over my own engine. I still lied about it on IRC at the time (the only drunk driver involved was me). Thankfully I didn't hurt anyone besides myself.

Would I have been safer in a better car (probably doing twice the speed)? Who knows. I'd feel a lot worse about writing off my current car though.

I'm still an idiot, but slightly less of a reckless idiot.

Are those runflats for the Polo?

A full set of 205/55R16's for my car was R2800 last year and even then I squealed like a pig on the way to the slaughter

Indeed these runflats are such a scam :(

R3000 a tyre for the 225/45/18 conti ssr5 :(

Oh I have, that's why I've never owned one ;)

I have owned two BMW's though, for the same reason ...

You have a strange way of approaching life.

My merc was an all around much better ownership experience (both from a service and driving point of view) than the BMW...

Having not owned a Merc I can only compare the driving experience, but had no issues with BMW's service.

I resent how they incessantly hike prices like clockwork regardless of whether or not sales are strong, but all the German luxury brands do that BS. Got to the point of being just not worth it anymore imo, which is why I own a Subaru now.

The way you guys talk about tyre prices, you implying his over 100k on the clock will still have an active motorplan and he has to fit runflats ...

My Dad has a Merc 2009 C180 that has been running awesome and has done 230 000km. The only issue that it has had is a steering rack lock(forgot the exact mechanical fault) as the car could not start after parking it nicely at a park and it needed to be towed to the dealership. It got fixed up and a cool bill of R10 000 came back.

The car has done over 80 000km since that issue and all it has needed it just normal service items plus a set of tyres and it continuous to do its daily duties with no issues at all.

Why are you looking at a BMW or Merc as your first car, is it a status thing or what because those cars are not cheap to maintain when major services come and not that you are looking at a model that would be 10 years old and over.

As a first car, get yourself a newer car that is under 5years old with low kilos and pocket better for services and upkeep.
You can look at MAzda 2, Polo, Ford Figo/ Fiesta etc. I am not sure what your car needs are, if you need a sedan or Hatch back and what type of travelling do you do daily/ monthly?
