if you're at a nice vantage point, how far could an AP stretch? And how would it work if 2 or even 3 small networks starts overlapping and connecting to each other?

For the love of god I can't even figure out how to setup two laptops to connect to each other with wireless, someone explain.. i have money and no technical inclination, need free advice!

Couple of questions:

Suppose I get all of the equipment, set up a node and connect to a neighboring node, what next?
Is this basically just good for gaming and file-sharing, or am I missing the point? Or is the idea to do some kind of internet connection sharing?

Also, since the antennae are directional, does that mean that I can only connect to one other node at a time?

It all depends on how many interfaces you set up and how many antennas you have.
I'd use minimum 2 wireless interfaces, 1 for the backbone and 1 to share with other users with some sort of omni directional antenna.

I can say "huh?" to that too noone

I have the same questions about the mesh networking as Chez. What would I use this network for if you are not allowed to use it for internet connection sharing?

Unfortunately, offering Internet access over JaWug would be very illegal. But if you as individual nodes on the network were to share a connection (eg. ADSL), share the costa, and sort out the security implications of this between yourselves, there's nothing anyone (Any other JaWug members) could do about it.

Currently, of 6 nodes that I'm connected to, 3 are Linux networking enthusiasts. Apart from playing games, chatting and filesharing, we play around with new technologies. We all have webservers and FTP servers, I host an IRC server and a Jabber server.

We run OSPF on the wireless network to deal with our routing, along with a few manual routes for the Windows based houses on the network. Not many people will find it interesting, but we've experimented with various dynamic routing protocols (BGP, RIP, OSPF) on the network, and it was quite educational.

Some of the members of my immediate network are software developers who work together, and being able to collaborate over the network has proven to be very helpful. They use a CVS to track their changes, and Netmeeting for small discussions.

The uses of the network are endless, even without Internet access.

We have played with IPv6, but that was a while back. Haven't been able to find anywhere that will provide us with an 6-to-4 tunnel locally (chews up ADSL cap).

If you are looking for nodes near you, I can only recommend that you plot a node on www.nodedb.com
This way you can see if you are near anyone (nodedb has their contact details if you want to get hold of them), and if there isn't anyone near you, someone might pop-up in your area, see your node and then contact you.

kickass and regardtv, I might be tempted to put up a node where I stay. As you know by now, I am very high up on a hill and can see 4 sentech towers (and connect to 2) and seeing as the house I am in was previously a base station for Megawan, why not?

As soon as I have the cashflow I'll start something up and we'll see from there, would love to communicate with my cousin in weltevreden park, that way I dont have to go to his house for lan's [:p]

noone, you're kidding?
Which highsite were you? :p
We could definately use a few of the old Megawan highsites for this network. They were in very good locations.

Please contact me :)

Am interested........ lets start up this private network

Atleast that will allow us to fix any problems and not rely on someone else, who pays someone else, who pays someone else, to screw us all

Hehe, yea well, like I said... would love to, just strapped for cash atm, tied up at the broker

And I mailed daffy re: the high site etc.. I'm sure he'll be able to help writing tut's about setting this stuff up... any ideas what we going to do on the network? :) I sure as hell won't mind playing a good game or two, providing we have enough people... dont have to move a buttcheeck or worry about pings :)

Well, I'm getting my wireless setup at the end of the month, which'll include a D-Link 802.11g Access Point and some D-Link cards... I'm going wireless on my network at home. I'm moving the study and I'm in NO mood for laying network cables again.

Now all I need is wireless power cables and everything else! I hate wires! :)

I hear you man. But wireless power might be a wee bit dangerous, imagine stumbling through one of those power streams [:D]

Anyone here got a wavestone price list ... I heard something like they have an SMC antenna there which does a few km, but I'm a bit sceptical though ...

Also, if there is someone in Pretoria, hatfield or hillcrest area, who's interested in a mesh network contact me pls

malec - im in. Im going to get a MSI 802.11g card with the AP software. Does this count as a Node? Im in hatfield. It has a detachable antenna so I can put in a bigger ant or cantenna if need be.

I have a wavestone list. mail me for the info. Yes they do have that antenna.

Do you have WLAN up and running? When they get stock I will be getting my card next week.

Hopefully my card can be like an AP and I can get at least onto some WLAN. I know we have at least 3 varsity WLANs so if I can hook into those it will be cool.

Guys, how does this work.. Can I connect to somebody in Jhn from Pta assuming there are enough nodes in between? How are IP's assigned etc? Where will the dhcp server sit etc etc
